  • S10E49 Sixy Football

    19/01/2021 Duración: 01h40min

John is joined by Scott from The Footy Blog Net as we take another trip down memory lane with the podcast theme being 6 a side football. You may wonder why but it was around this time of year that the Tennents Sixes were played. As youngsters watching football it was something different and exciting. We pick what we think would be a best six a side Scotland team from our lifetime with contributions from other regulars from the podcast plus friends and listeners. There are also some entries in terms of club sides in Scotland too. Imagine the likes of Gazza or Moravcik playing in it... We hope you enjoy this one as we look to do something different as opposed to just covering the weekend action. Tweet us @sffpodcast Facebook - Scottish Football Forums Instagram - sffpodcast

  • S10E48 Guest Special: Scott McGill

    15/01/2021 Duración: 01h05min

It's the second guest special of the week as Good John is joined by Celtic and Scotland fan Scott McGill. Scott became a Twitter sensation in the aftermath of Scotland's historic playoff win over Serbia with his acoustic version of "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie." He became such a hit that the SFA used this version, along with his take on "Na na David Marshall", in their video montage celebrating qualification. He talks about this new found fame, some of his memories following the National team and hopes for the Euros, including if he's been approached to pen the Scotland Euro's song. As well as supporting the National team, Scott is a big Celtic fan and he talks about his favourite times following the Hoops, as well as giving an honest account of a difficult season including the farce of the Dubai trip. We round off with the usual quick fire questions, including a combined Celtic and Scotland XI. Scott's album "Hard Times Come Again No More" is available directly from his website - https://scottmcgill.bigcartel.c

  • S10E45 Dumbfries and Galloway

    29/12/2020 Duración: 01h31min

In the last podcast of 2020 we have John and Donald on to discuss what has been going on in Scottish football. We take a different approach this week by focusing on management for various reasons. Tributes are paid to Jim McLean who Davie Sneddon who both sadly passed away in the last week and are legends at Dundee United and Kilmarnock. Donald had the pleasure of spending time in Davie's company at Alzheimer events. Unfortunately we have to discuss a disgraceful incident with Alex Dyer being targeted with racist abuse in the form of a letter sent to Kilmarnock. This highlights the importance of the Black Lives Matter campaign to end racism. Shelly Kerr has left the Scotland job and we discuss who may be potential candidates and how it will be a high profile job after the recent success of the national team under her. Could she move back in to the men's game? As the transfer window approaches us, we put our manager hats on to discuss where teams need to strengthen and speculation so far with regards to p

  • S10E44 Hughes Highland Return

    22/12/2020 Duración: 01h43min

This week John is joined by regular Tony and Andy from the Press and Journal. We kick off the show by discussing the sacking of Stuart Kettlewell and the announcement that John Hughes is returning to management. Andy gives us a great insight in to the situation at Ross County. Celtic clinched the quadruple treble though you wouldn't think it as Tony thinks there are still major concerns at the club. It's a remarkable achievement and one that will be tough to match or beat. The Premiership action is discussed briefly as Rangers stretch their lead at the top while down the bottom end of the league it is very tight. As Andy is on we get him to represent us in the Lower League predictions game where Ally Graham has a 5-3 lead. The podcast concludes with some fun stuff in relation to Christmas. 17/12/2020 Duración: 01h37min

The two John's are joined by Ally Graham as we cover what has gone on in the lower leagues so far. We kick off the show by talking about the lower league predictions game which Ally currently leads and get him to give us his predictions for this week. League Two is where we start our review as we discuss the excellent start that Queen's Park have got off to. We take a look back at our predictions at the start of the season and see how well we are doing. Is League One the most exciting league in Scotland currently? Falkirk have got off to a terrific start and may be capable of running away with it especially if they win the Boxing Day clash against Falkirk. It's pretty tight after that with teams vying for a playoff spot and to avoid relegation. Ally bemoans the lack of goals among strikers in the leagues. The Championship has seen Hearts start well but there are a few teams who have only lost once so far. We discuss whether Dundee need a change of manager and the current situation with Morton. We round t

In addition to her professional career, Ali is a big St Mirren fan and talks about her time following The Buddies from the Love Street days, through the League Cup 2013 win over Hearts, to

  • S10E41 Managerial Merry Go Round

    15/12/2020 Duración: 01h30min

John is joined by Tony and Donald as they discuss a busy week in Scottish football. We get started by discussing Europe and the draw for the next round where Rangers look to have got a favourable draw. Celtic had nothing to play for but managed to win with some positive changes to the team. Things move on to domestic matters and the Scottish Cup final which takes place on Sunday. Can Hearts pull off a shock? Will Lennon stick with the players who have won last two games? Livingston have won two games since Martindale took interim charge and we discuss whether he will get the job. This leads on to discussion about Morton and who may get the job there. The League Cup quarter finals take place in midweek where we discuss the pressure that Rangers will face if they do not go on to win it. • S10E40 Guest Special: Eoin Jess

    13/12/2020 Duración: 01h43min

It's a birthday special for our next guest as Good John speaks to Aberdeen Hall of Fame inductee Eoin Jess, who turns 50 today. Eoin discusses his life in Barcelona and how they have been coping with the pandemic. We then flip the conversation back to his childhood days and who his heroes were growing up in the 70's and 80's. Onto his career, the first time the wider footballing world became aware of Eoin Jess was when he was given a surprise start in the 1989 Skol League Cup Final at the age of 18. He took to the occasion like duck to water as Aberdeen beat Rangers 2-1 to lift the trophy, and he won a Scottish Cup medal as an unused substitute as the Dons beat Celtic in the 1990 Scottish Cup Final on penalties. During Eoin's first spell at Pittodrie, he won two Young Player of the Year awards, won Sportscene goal of the season in 1990/91, earned the first of 18 Scotland caps and played a key role in Aberdeen winning the 1995/96 CocaCola League Cup where they beat Dundee 2-0 in the Final. Jess joined Coven

  • S10E39 Imagination of the Nation

    08/12/2020 Duración: 55min

The podcast is a bit different for our regular weekly one as we focus on Scotland and the World Cup qualifying draw. John is joined by Iain from The Tartan Army Magazine. It appears that we may have got a decent draw when you consider who we could potentially have got. The guys discuss each team we drew and our previous record against them. We got a couple teams who we have fairly recent memories of including Israel who must be as sick of us as we are of them. Can we dare to dream in terms of maybe even winning the group? We're in an optimistic mood so... At the weekend, Ally Graham went ahead in the Lower League Predictions game so we need to bounce back. This week it is the turn of Krys to represent the podcast. We finish off with a very brief roundup of the weekend action in the Premiership and the current situation with Covid and impact it has had on certain teams. • S10E38 Guest Special: Rachael Boyle

    03/12/2020 Duración: 50min

It's the second installment of the Women's Edinburgh Derby as Good John speaks to Hibernian Women player, and current Scotland International, Rachael Boyle, wife of Martin Boyle who, of course, plays for the Mens side at Hibs. The night before our podcast, Rachael played in Scotland's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Finland, a loss that rules the Scots out of a place at the delayed Euro 2021 Finals. She speaks about that disappointment and her International career overall, where she has won 37 caps so far. Having missed out on the 2019 World Cup due to giving birth to her daughter Amelia Grace, Rachael is determined to help Scotland reach the 2023 Finals in Australia and New Zealand. Rachael's early career was spent with two spells at the old Aberdeen Ladies side, with a spell at Forfar Farmington in between. She joined Hibs in 2016, around the same time as her husband, and has enjoyed a trophy laden career as Hibs have been the Cup Queens of the Women's game, although the League title still eludes them due to

  • S10E37 Guest Special: Lia Tweedie

    02/12/2020 Duración: 35min

It's Edinburgh derby week in the SWPL as Hearts entertain Hibs on Sunday. In Part One of our guest specials leading up to the match, Good John is joined by Hearts centre forward Lia Tweedie, who joined them this season from their arch rivals. Lia talks about the reasons for joining Hearts and the difficult start they've had to their first season in the top flight after last season's promotion. Being a Hearts fan, she talks about the determination for the club to improve and establish themselves in the top flight. We go over Lia's Scotland career at Under 17 and Under 19 level, the latter of which she scored three goals in consecutive games against Ukraine, Albania and Austria, and how she knew Erin Cuthbert was going to be a star in the game. Lia talks fondly about her time with Hibs, where they won seven Cup competitions since 2016 but have been runners up to Glasgow City in each of the last five seasons. Naturally, she is looking forward to coming up against her old team and describes what the derby means

  • S10E36 Weekend of Tiers

    01/12/2020 Duración: 01h34min

This week on the podcast, we have John and Tony discussing what has been going on in Scottish football. We kick off by talking once again about Celtic's current form with them exiting Europe and getting knocked out of the League Cup. Sunday saw protests and we discuss whether Lennon will be given a chance to turn around their season or if a new man is required. Things continue to go well on the other side of Glasgow with only slight concern being losing a two goal lead against Benfica. It isn't a massive issue as they look on course to progress to knockout stages. It was a weekend of shocks in the cup as Aberdeen and Hearts both went out too. Tony asks John if he is concerned about recent results. We discuss the mixed fortunes of St Johnstone and Motherwell thanks to fans of their respective clubs. In the Lower League predictions game we are now back to 3-3 with Iain getting the win for us at the weekend. This week it is the turn of Tony to represent the podcast. We finish off the podcast by paying tribu

  • S10E35 Luke Shanley - the only TA in Belgrade

    28/11/2020 Duración: 36min

Scotland's memorable playoff victory over Serbia, which sealed a first qualification for a major finals since 1998, missed just one thing - the Tartan Army. Whilst no fans were allowed to travel to Belgrade, one lucky paid up member of the Scotland Supporters Club was able to be there in his work capacity to witness the penalty shootout win which secured a spot at the delayed Euro 2020. Sky Sports reporter Luke Shanley was the man who made every Scotland fan jealous by being in Serbia for the match. He shared his experience with Good John in what it was like to report on the build up to the game, watch from the sidelines in the rain as Scotland put us all through the emotional turmoil to get the job done, and giving the immediate post-match interviews, including one with a rather emotional Ryan Christie who summed up just what it was like to end more than two decades of pain. As a result of being in Serbia, Luke has had to quarantine for 14 days, but it was well worth it. He's now looking forward to the Eur

  • S10E34 Guest Special: Emma Hunter

    26/11/2020 Duración: 55min

Good John's education into Women's Football continues as he is joined by Aberdeen Women's Co-Manager Emma Hunter. It was an unfortunate week for Emma to be on as the Dons Ladies went down to a 5-1 win to Partick Thistle, their first defeat and dropped points from the first seven games of SWPL2 this season. She starts by talking about learning from this experience and hopes to put things right against Kilmarnock on Sunday as they aim to get their promotion push back on track. Emma talks openly about the challenges the Women's game faces in terms of gaining more exposure from the media and how Covid has affected plans to get more fans to games. She also talks about the work she does with the Community Trust and behind the scenes at Cormack Park. We chat a bit about the Scotland Women's National Team who have a crucial Euro 2021 Qualifying double header in Portugal and at home to Finland this weekend. We round off with Emma's hopes for Aberdeen going forward and a round of quick fire questions, and what she r

We then move onto John's love for Rangers Football Club and some of his favourite memories following them, including supporting them through the 9 in a row years and being in Manchester for the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. He gives his thoughts on the current Rangers side and their chances of ending Celtic's quest for 10 in a row. We round off with the usual quick fire questions including John's Best Rangers XI. • S10E32 James Tavernier Penalty

    24/11/2020 Duración: 01h22min

John is joined by Scott from The Footy Blog Net and Iain from The Famous Tartan Army Magazine. To kick off we discuss the disappointment of how our Nations League campaign ended for the World Cup campaign. There is agreement though that massive progress has been made after qualifying for the Euros next year and that remaining in group B will help us. We then go on to discuss the impact of what occurred with the under 21 squad with players contracting COVID and others having to self isolate. This has also impacted the Women's team as Shelley Kerr will have to self isolate and miss their Euro 22 qualifying double header against Portugal and Finland. It's a well done to Glasgow City as they advanced in their Champions League qualifying tie against Valur to make the group stages again. Let's hope they can do as well as last season or even better. The chat moves on to the Premiership as Celtic continue to wobble, is a new manager on the way? Can they arrest the slump? They've only actually lost one game in the

  • S10E31 Guest Special: Iain King

After covering off more reflection on Scotland's qualification to Euro 2020, Iain talks about how he worked his way up the journalism ladder before joining The Scottish Sun in 2000. During his 15 years at the paper, he became Chief Football Writer then became Sports Editor in 2007. Iain was honest when asked about defending the papers reputation in comparison to its English version and how they overtook the Daily Record to become the most sold paper in Scotland. Iain also won Football Writer of the Year for three consecutive years thanks to scoops like Barry Ferguson's return to Rangers and Roy Keane signing for Celtic. Following a decision to take redundancy from the Scottish Sun in 2015, Iain became CEO at Airdrie and he goes through the challenges of the role, none bigger than when Manager, and good friend, Eddie Wol

  • S10E30 No Scotland No Party

    18/11/2020 Duración: 01h42min

John is joined by regular Tony and Iain from The Famous Tartan Army Magazine. We've waited a long time but Scotland have finally qualified for a tournament for the first time since 1998. The guys are obviously delighted and can't quite believe it. It's a great achievement and welcome respite with regards to current COVID situation. There is a bit of chat about the game and the ups and downs that occurred. Thankfully David Marshall saved the day and left us to party like it was 1998. We discuss the turnaround of events and how the Nations League has changed our fortunes. Can we beat Israel and get promoted to Group A? This leads us to trying to explain how it can benefit us in the future. The boost to the economy should be significant with merchandise sales and hopefully fans allowed to attend games. We discuss whether we can get past the group stage for the first time at a tournament. We finish off by taking a nostalgic look at our favourite kits.
