  • The Big Lie

    01/09/2016 Duración: 22min

The Big Lie You have to see this vintage movie at Public Access America https://youtu.be/eiSrXHMl9I8 The Big Lie was a 1951 anti-communist propaganda film produced by the US Army. It begins with the quote by Adolf Hitler: "The great masses will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one" and likens the Communist regimes of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, China and North Korea to the former Nazi regime. It then exposes the creation of Kremlin-controlled puppet regimes in those countries, describing how the people were "sold out." Consistent with American thinking of the time, Communist China is also described as a Soviet puppet state, although it never was an actual Soviet puppet. Footage of marching is shown for each of the satellite states. Imagery goes back and forth between Nazi and communist themes in an attempt to link the two ideologies and persuade the still-reeling public that communism was as dangerous as Nazism. The final part of the film attacks peace movements

  • We The Japanese People

    25/08/2016 Duración: 31min

We The Japanese People https://youtu.be/pLea-_6dUQQ This is the definitive story of how the United States attempted to turn Japan into a democratic and peace-loving nation by drafting a new constitution for its former enemy—and then pretending that the Japanese had written it. Based on scores of interviews with participants in the process, as well as exhaustive research in Japanese and American records, the book explores in vivid detail the thinking and intentions behind the drafting of the constitution. Confusion and strife marked planning for the democratization of Japan, first in Washington, then in occupied Tokyo. Policy makers in the State, War, and Navy departments, the Joint Chiefs, and the White House contended bitterly over how to devise an “unconditional surrender” that would minimize Allied casualties while according the victor supreme authority over a soundly defeated Japan. By war’s end, there were still no firm guidelines on a host of crucial issues, including how the Japanese system of gove

    12/08/2016 Duración: 04min

The Watts Riots-1965 The Watts riots took place in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles from August 11 to 17, 1965. On August 11, 1965, 21-year-old Marquette Frye, an African American man behind the wheel of his mother's 1955 Buick, was arrested for drunk driving. A minor roadside argument broke out, and then escalated into a fight. The community reacted in outrage, and six days of looting and arson followed. Los Angeles police needed the support of nearly 4,000 members of the California Army National Guard to quell the riots, which resulted in 34 deaths and over $40 million in property damage. The riots were blamed principally on police racism. It was the city's worst unrest until the Rodney King riots of 1992. In the Great Migration of the 1920s, major populations of African-American moved to Northern and Midwestern cities like Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City to pursue jobs in newly established manufacturing industries; to establish better educat

On 27 August, reconnaissance aircraft recorded a weak tropical depression about 560 kilometers (350 miles) east-southeast of Barbados (this was believed to be the same system). Later that day, the depression was named “Betsy”, and by the afternoon of 29 August, the storm had intensified into a hurricane, 200 miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the next couple of days, the hurricane looped 440 kilometers (275 miles) north of Puerto Rico weakening to a tropical storm. Turning west, on 1 September, the storm regained hurricane status and drifted 560 kilometers (350 miles) east of Daytona Beach, Florida. At this point, the hurricane appeared to be heading toward the Carolinas. However, on 4

  • Space Shuttle Challenger disaster

    09/08/2016 Duración: 36min

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter Challenger (OV-099) (mission STS-51-L) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members, which included five NASA astronauts and two Payload Specialists. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 EST (16:39 UTC). Disintegration of the vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The O-ring was not designed to fly under unusually cold conditions as in this launch. Its failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB's aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external

Hindenburg Crash, 05/06/1937 To watch the original video please visit Public Access America https://youtu.be/oii2uyPWq5s The Hindenburg disaster occurred on May 6, 1937, as the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. Of the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), there were 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen). One worker on the ground was also killed, making a total of 36 fatalities. The disaster was the subject of spectacular newsreel coverage, photographs, and Herbert Morrison's recorded radio eyewitness reports from the landing field, which were broadcast the next day. A variety of hypotheses have been put forward for both the cause of ignition and the initial fuel for the ensuing fire. The incident shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era.
