There are times when I think that my dog may be smarter than I am. I believe that most dog owners feel this way at some point. This thought occurred to me on an evening when she helped teach me a valuable life lesson.

A “big reveal” is popular today for expectant parents to reveal the gender of their baby to excited family and friends. Mystery stories and movies also employ a “big reveal” at a crucial time in the story to maintain interest. By the time we become adults, we have all done things we regret. Some regrets may be from childhood, with the only consequence being our embarrassment when they are humorously recounted at family gatherings. Times change, and one generation’s meaningful metaphors are lost on the next. In an urban age of dizzying technological advances, Internet access, and an endless array of devices, earthy agricultural references lose their impact. This is lamentable, since life lessons are prominently symbolized by agrarian practices in the Bible. Many colorful expressions and illustrations picture prosperity on one hand and deprivation on the other, offering spiritual lessons to be learned from each. The words “Winter Storm Watch”—or any kind of snow or ice in the forecast—seem to trigger an urgent need for bread. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Within minutes of a wintry weather forecast, supermarket and convenience store shelves are emptied. Jokes are made about it and fun is poked at those who react this way to routine news for the season. It shows the insecurity that people feel as a threat approaches. If we are going to be housebound due to inclement weather, having enough food on hand is essential, and bread is almost universally considered a necessity. Asking questions is a wonderful way to open the doors to learning. Questions are a teaching tool long used by educators to simultaneously teach and draw out insights from pupils—prompting them to think! My wife and I once had the opportunity to rescue a baby deer, which had become separated from its mother and was on the verge of dying. While we were driving to and from a deer rehabilitation center in North Carolina, we began discussing our experience, and it became quite apparent that there is a great deal of responsibility and joy associated with taking care of God’s creation. We saw this experience as a God-given opportunity to help us learn some vital lessons in how important it is to tend and keep the earth. Many years ago, when my son was about two years old, I used to carry him around on my shoulders and attempt to teach him important things about life. One night I pointed to the bright, full moon and told him, “God made the Moon.” In his small, new voice he would repeat, “God bade boon?!” I thought that what he said was priceless, and I would prompt him to say it to others by asking him, “Who made the Moon?” “God bade boon!” he would respond with full assurance. Standards of behavior are rapidly declining. News headlines continue to shock and dismay anyone with a traditional sense of decency and morality. Have you observed angry, demanding groups with a grievance, real or imagined, or special interests seeking redress with threats of disruption or violence to achieve their ends? Consider personal behaviors that were illegal for millennia but are now considered to be “civil rights.” Think about the surreal assertion that biological gender is not limited to “male and female” and that individuals can “choose” their gender without regard to their actual chromosomal make up or genitalia. Yet, all these situations, no matter how deviant, are not only being allowed, but are being aggressively and sometimes angrily promoted, often to children who have not reached puberty. Most people dismiss the commercialism, the pagan influence, or the impossibility of a December 25 birth, and take comfort in slogans such as "Put Christ back in Christmas." Ten years have passed since the 2008 financial crisis, and most Americans are now pleased with the direction of their nation’s economy. Unemployment is down and the stock market is up! Most news outlets are primarily concerned not with arguing about the strength of the economy, but with making sure that their party or president gets credit for it. They excel at claiming good headlines as feathers in the caps of either former President Barack Obama or sitting President Donald Trump, but fail to ask harder, more relevant questions.
