Rob's Soapbox - Congratulations, You Woke Up!
14/02/2021 Duración: 11minTwenty-five years ago, comedian Chris Rock famously riffed on the divide in the African American community between black people and “N-words.” The latter, he said, would always brag about accomplishing and doing things that were considered by the rest of us as things you’re expected to do; most famously, taking care of your kids. While in 1996, the bit was viewed as a black-on-black joke designed to be that community’s version of acknowledging that all cultures and races have their own version of “white-trash,” it turned out to be sadly prophetic for the entire country and culture writ large.Enter 2021; where we celebrate the most mundane and basic things as actual accomplishments. We brag about 19-year-olds who no longer live at home. We actually hold “graduation ceremonies” for kids segueing from elementary to middle school and middle to high school. Good luck getting a job with either of those diplomas, dipshit.I have friends who own small businesses that have to thank their employees who actually show up on

Rob's Soapbox - The Minimum Wage
07/02/2021 Duración: 06minHow little we can possibly pay people to work is back in the news and so is the endless debate over America’s minimum wage. As per usual, everyone is wrong on this subject. On the left, my idiotic Democratic friends argue for what’s called a “living wage,” which is nothing more than a trojan horse for ultimately sending money to people, regardless of whether they are working or not, to ensure that they have enough to “live.” If you Google the phrase “Universal Basic Income,” you will see endless stories of moron after moron from Mark Zuckerberg to Andrew Yang and everyone in between all the way to Bernie Sanders espousing the virtues of taking money away from those who work to earn it, and handing it to those who have no interest in, or intention of, ever working. Raising the minimum wage under the guise of guaranteeing people the ability to afford a certain level of lifestyle is the first step towards Universal Basic Income. It’s un-American and an instant non-motivator. It traps and keeps people u

Rob's Soapbox - We've Cured The Flu!
01/02/2021 Duración: 10minMy wife is constantly encouraging me to do more positively themed soapboxes. I’ve told her that the very nature of having a platform to share my views implies negativity because no one really wants to listen to someone saying everything is great. But, she’s right…it doesn’t have to be negative ALWAYS. And so, this week, I come to you with amazing news.Congratulations, America! In addition to such great contributions to the world such as Jazz, Thomas Edison, potato chips, and the credit card, The United States has once again bestowed upon the world another gift; we have cured the flu!The viral disease that we came to know as influenza in 1933, but more commonly has been referred to simply as the flu, has been ravaging the Earth for 6,000 years, but it has taken America only 10 months to eradicate it from the globe. All hail the Red, White and Blue.As many as 650,000 people in the world die every year of the flu…well, they used to. Now, and forever more moving forward, the number will essentially be zero. You s

Rob's Soapbox - Don't You Dare Be Happy
24/01/2021 Duración: 06minROB’S SOAPBOX FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 24, 2021DON’T YOU DARE BE HAPPY! As my wife Christina would say: “What are we doing here?”With almost no ability to agree on anything anymore, one thing that all sane, lucid Americans would concur on is that we have done deep, intense, and devastating damage to our psyches this past year. We’d never agree on whose fault that is, what should or shouldn’t have been done, or pretty much anything else, but we’d all agree that we’re far from knowing the full mental, emotional, and psychological damage we’ve done to our society as a whole. And then there’s the children…Jesus, what we’ve done to our children…So, given that, can we just stop with the terrible and the fear and the “things are never ever going to get better?”We will no doubt never again be like we were one year ago…but things will get better than this; if we allow them to, but we don’t even let ourselves be happy, positive, joyful, or hopeful about anything at all anymore. Not as a collective.Remember the drea

Rob's Soapbox - My (No Doubt First Of Many) 2021 Meltdown
19/01/2021 Duración: 12minThere is no coherence to this soapbox, nor is there meant to be any. It’s late Monday on MLK day and I’m already way past my self-imposed deadline for when this should have been written and recorded…in other words, I’m having a 2021 day. I’ve taken great schadenfreude over the past year watching moron after moron believe that there was light at the end of the tunnel. The pandemic and our related troubles would end with Memorial Day…then Independence Day…then Labor Day…then Election Day…and certainly when 2020 was over. This was always lunacy. There was never any reason to believe that we were going to get our lives back at any of those times, or any time in the near future. We’re less than a month into 2021 and we’d all be wise to call it a second wasted year. Here’s to 2022. So, it comes as no surprise to me that I’ve emotionally melted down this weekend. The endless amount of shit we all have to deal with, piled on top of actual life, is more than enough to break all of us at times; and

Rob's Soapbox - Corporate America Teaches Life
11/01/2021 Duración: 16minFor years I have been railing against my (mostly conservative) friends who would sing the praises of big business while decrying the notion of big government. When I would point out that the two walk lock-step with one another, their favorite go-to line was “Well, if I have to choose, I’d rather choose big business.” That’s the point; there is no choice, because there is no difference, and no light between them; a fact that has played out right before our very eyes over the past 10 months; big business has thrived during the pandemic and seen profits explode while more than 100,000 small businesses have closed forever, with tens of thousands more about to. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/16/yelp-data-shows-60percent-of-business-closures-due-to-the-coronavirus-pandemic-are-now-permanent.htmlhttps://jacobinmag.com/2020/06/coronavirus-pandemic-2008-bailout-wall-street-rich-stimulus Meanwhile, the few large corporations that were financially impacted received extraordinary bailout funds (disguised as “loan

Rob's Soapbox - The Humor of 2020
29/11/2020 Duración: 10minRegardless of your view on the Coronavirus, almost every single human alive is experiencing Pandemic Fatigue. If you’re genuinely terrified of the virus, you are exhausted seeing people ignore guidelines and warnings and refusing to wear masks. If you’re a covidiot, you grew tired of lockdowns and fear mongering before summer and you just want to live with the virus and tell those who are afraid to be the ones who stay home. If you’re a small business owner, you wonder how much longer you’ll survive and your sleepless nights are countless. Basically, the only person not suffering pandemic fatigue is Jeff Bezos. In times like these, we need to laugh. In fact, throughout much of 2020, the only way to cope with the lunacy we’ve all seen and experienced has been through humor. Sadly, much of it has been through the prism of laughing AT the decisions and rules imposed on us. Speaking of being exhausted, we’re all tired of either pointing out how stupid the Covid rules are, or wondering why more people do

Rob's Soapbox - The True Story of Thanksgiving (Updated)
22/11/2020 Duración: 11minOn November 3, 2008 I originally printed the essay below. We have reprinted it each year since on Thanksgiving weeks, with small alterations to address issues of the time, and it never ceases to garner a huge reaction. In 2020, more than ever, people need to be reminded of the positive roots of their nation…and despite what you’re told seemingly on the daily, there are some positive things about America. The story below is 100% provably true (and footnoted accordingly), and the fact that most of you have never heard it before is scandalous to say the least - For the full soapbox visit radradio.com and click to Rob's SoapboxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
