Between the 1960s and early 2000s, over 90% of Lake Chad has shrunk. Today, the lake provides water to over 68 million people in both Chad and Nigeria, and to the surrounding countries of Cameroon and Niger. The Garuwanga Project is working to build a legal framework that would protect Aboriginal traditional knowledge of biodiversity. Historically, corporations have taken Aboriginal knowledge from communities and patented those practices, leaving the community without financial reward or even barring them from practicing their own knowledge.
