The ship is ready at the dock and the crew has been hired. A swashbuckling adventure for all ages!  PART I—"THE OLD BUCCANEER" An old sailor, calling himself "the captain," real name Billy Bones, comes to lodge at the Admiral Benbow Inn on the West English coast during the mid-18th-century, paying the innkeeper's son, Jim Hawkins, a few pennies to keep a lookout for Long John Silver "a one-legged seafaring man." A former shipmate with intact legs, but lacking two fingers, shows up to confront Billy about sharing his treasure map. After running the stranger off in a violent fight, Billy, who drinks far too much rum, has a stroke and tells Jim that his former shipmates covet his map to buried treasure. After a visit from an evil blind man named Pew who gives him "the black spot" as a summons to share the treasure map, Billy has another stroke and dies; Next week: Jim and his mother (his father has also died just a few days before) unlock the sea chest, finding some money, a journal, and the map. In this final chapter Smith goes to see Pocahontas during her visit to England- she succumbs to the smoke-filled climate over London after meeting the King and Queen. Back in Jamestown Opecancanough is plotting to kill all the whites and tries in 1622,  Smith embarks on another voyage of discovery and names New England, then gets captured by a French privateer, finally making his way back to England.  The seeds of a great adventure story are borne if I can ever get the time to write it- any ghost writers out there? The ship Sea Adventure, carrying much needed supplies and colonists to Jamestown, is caught in a terrible storm and is washed up in the reefs on Bermuda, where they spend 9 months recovering and building two ships before finally heading again toward Jamestown.  With Smith now out of the picture at the beleagured colony, the colonists fail to continue working with the Indians, who have now turned hostile, and they have lost what stores they had. They enter a terrible starving time and winter past which only 1 out of 8 of the over 400 colonists will survive. Pocahontas, in 1611 is kidnapped by the English and converted to Christianity, marrying John Rolfe. Gates and Dale take charge of the colonists and a strict enforcement of new laws begins. Capt. Smith issues his famous "if you don't work you don't eat" order and the gentlemen portion of them revolts. The Dutchmen that were ordered by Newport to build a palatial home for Powhatan turn traitor, joining the Indians and smuggling guns and powder out of Jamestown, training the Indians how to use them. Things go from bad to worse when a plot to take Smith out of the picture works. In Part Six we see Smith elected president of the colony in place of his former rival Ratcliffe, who had turned as many against Capt Smith as possible before his poor character was revealed to all by hoarding food and wine for himself.  Smith finds that Ratcliff was operating under an assumed name. Meanwhile, Newport arrives with a ship full of...not needed food and supplies...but a group of new colonists and supplies intended for the coronation of a new king of Virginia- King Powhatan.  A foolish move if ever there was one, to prop up Powhatan with a title, a new house, and a shipload of goodies.  This kills all of Smith's past efforts at trade and  sets up Powhatan with the confidence that he can get whatever he wants from the Great White Father and his lackey Capt. Part 5 takes us on two voyages of discovery through the Chesapeake Bay (the largest inland bay in North America) in 1608 where John Smith and his men encounter numerous Indian attacks and ambushes while at the same winning them over with smart statesmanship and cool judgement. They also find a native named Mosco- who is the first Indian they have seen with a beard. They also hear stories of a tribe of giants named the Susquehannocks. Smith names a number of geographic points after his men and moments from his life, and he is nearly killed by a stingray at a point named Stingray point today. In Part 4 Smith becomes involved in the war against the Turks as Christians battle Turks in Hungary and Transylvania to regain their cities and land. His name is drawn and he faces a well-known Turkish knight  in a duel with lances on horseback. Later he falls in battle, is captured, and given to a Turkish princess as a slave. He finally escapes and heads back to England where he meets Gosnold and is invited to join an expedition to the New World. We then rejoin the Jamestown story at the point where Smith and a small contingent are sent to explore the upper reaches of the Chickahominy River-some of his men are killed- and he is taken captive.
