Sinopsis

Hi, my name is Andrew, and I watch movies. I have watched thousands of movies in my life, and enjoy writing, and talking about them. There is no discrimination based on genre or age here, I watch 'em all, and podcast about them. Sometimes, I even watch the movies with other people, and have an after movie conversations on the show. I hope everyone enjoys the evolution of this podcast, and our journey through the film world together. Let's start the conversation!

Episodios

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Scream" and "Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead"

    03/10/2018 Duración: 26min

Today, on the 3rd day of our 31 Films of Halloween journey, we are going to take a look at an under appreciated horror film, one that went completely under the radar...wait..."Scream"? Well, people have seen that. Looks like we are re-visiting a Halloween season favorite with "Scream". Tis the season for Pop Secret, and your favorite Ghost Faced villains.  Andrew also watches what ended up being the only chapter of the "Masters of Horror" series that he didn't like, "Dance of the Dead". If there's only 1 bad episode out of 26, that is one hell of an average, so this is in no way an attempt to disparage the wonderful series.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Tales from the Darkside" and "Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch-House"

    02/10/2018 Duración: 22min

Join Jess and Andrew on day 2 of our 31 Films of Halloween journey. Today we are watching "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie", which is streaming now on HBO. A gauntlet was thrown by a podcast we love when they stated that "Tales from the Darkside" was a better anthology series than "Creepshow". We saw this as a "challenge accepted" moment, and decided to watch Tales. The fact that it's our second streaming feature this month should tell you where we fell on this. Andrew also continues as guide through "Masters of Horror" with the second episode "Dreams in the Witch-House", Stewart Gordon's entry into the series. We are HP Lovecraft junkies over here, so this was a treat.  Join us tomorrow for "Scream"

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Season of the Witch" and "Masters of Horror: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road"

    01/10/2018 Duración: 41min

Welcome to our favorite time of year at Andrew Watches Movies. Today marks day 1 of our journey through the month of October. Today, we are going to revisit one of the most maligned sequels of all time. The Great Joe Bob Briggs once said that this was the worst sequel of all time. We think that isn't a fair assessment anymore, and only applies to those who were upset it didn't feature Michael Meyers. For what it is, it's a great addition into what should have been an anthology film series. The Boogeyman just had a hold that was too strong for us all.  Andrew is also here as your guide through the anthology series "Masters of Horror" from creator Mick Garris. The obsession with this show is strong, and begins "On and Off a Mountain Road".  Join us again tomorrow for "Tales from the Darkside", and another entry in the "Masters of Horror" series.

  • The Wheel: Diabolique: The Devils

    28/09/2018 Duración: 25min

The Wheel is a segment that we do at Andrew Watches Movies every week (unless school pushes it back a little for Jess). It's a "movie club" we are trying to start on the show, and hope that people follow along with. There are 18 choices The Wheel, and last week it landed on "Diabolique", which is streaming on Filmstruck and Amazon Prime. Andrew was extremely excited to show this to Jess for the first time, as watching someone else try to guess what is going on, and how it will end is just as much fun as watching the film itself.  We hope that you enjoy this mini episode, and join us on our October Journey. We will be doing a 31 days of October list with write ups and podcasts for each and every film. Follow along at AndrewWatchesMovies.com.

  • Assassination Nation and A Simple Favor

    27/09/2018 Duración: 33min

Join Jess and Andrew as they travel to the cineplex to see "Assassination Nation". This was a criminally underseen film its first weekend, and I hope some good word of mouth can help it recover for week 2. This is one hell of a satire of our messed up society.  Andrew also gets a chance to see "A Simple Favor" a fantastic comedy that the studios attempted to disguise as a thriller in the trailers.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-298402626 Mike Dietrich's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/mike.dietrich.art/ Nothing Left Song for Y'All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0r5JiU00c

  • "In the Mouth of Madness", "Pyewacket", "Emelie", "Phantasm"

    24/09/2018 Duración: 55min

Preparing for the October/Shocktober season, the vault is being cleared. Films covered are:  In the Mouth of Madness- Jess and I cover the last great film John Carpenter has made so far. This one is streaming on Shudder, and is a must see for all Carpenter/Horror fans. Phantasm- The 1979 classic has a restored version on Shudder, and holds its place in the annals of Horror history.  Emelie- Every parents worst nightmare is contained within this little indie thriller streaming on Netflix.  Pyewacket- In the wake of "Hereditary" we uncovered some other gems involving conjurings. This was a standout.  Odd Thomas- Fun film from Anton Yelchin on Netflix.  House on Willow Street- A film on Netflix with some great cover art, and nice horror effects to match I Saw the Devil- A fantastic game of cat and mouse, a Korean thriller that would hold its own against "Silence of the Lambs".

  • Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, Stepfather, High Tension

    20/09/2018 Duración: 01h17min

This episode, we are doing a little bit of "Fall Cleaning" with an wide array of films that have been sitting on the shelf for us for too long. We have a HUGE October coming up, so I want to clean out our backlog before the month starts. On this episode, we are going to be visiting the "Puppet Master" hotel for the latest chapter of the series, "The Littlest Reich". This may be the most fun film in the entire franchise. "The Babysitter" on Netflix was the latest film to distract Jess, and keep her up late watching instead of working on homework. "Kill List" was one that deserved a huge mention, but just hasn't fit into an episode. Happy to include it here. "Society and The Wraith"- was a fun as hell Midnight Mutant type double feature that I'm happy to finally share with everyone. Both are on Shudder, and are surprising. Especially Society. OMFG.  "Stepfather"- is a visit to classic 80's camp with Terry O Quinn as our guide. It's on Amazon, and is required viewing. Slice- New Release from A24 that was part of

  • "Blaze", "Lizzie", "Mandy": A New Release Episode

    17/09/2018 Duración: 44min

Join Jess and Andrew on their journeys to the Cineplex. This week, Andrew got a chance to see a showing of the limited release "Blaze" from Writer/Director Ethan Hawke. This is a film that deserves a wider release, which is a theme with this episode. Every one of these has too limited of a release right now. We got to see the new film about Lizzie Borden from Chloe Sevigny, and Kristen Stewart. This film is also extremely limited right now, playing in 4 theaters nationwide.  The real crime is that "Mandy", the new masterpiece starring Nic Cage, was only playing in 1 theater NEAR Los Angeles. Jess and I had to drive two and a half hours round trip to see this, and it was worth every minute of that drive to experience it on the big screen. We also watched it again on VOD that night, so it's a film that will stick with us eternally after seeing it.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundc

  • Paying off The Great Dictator, and The Predator series

    14/09/2018 Duración: 56min

Jess and Andrew got the chance to pay off The Wheel with a viewing of Charlie Chaplin's 1940 film, "The Great Dictator". This important film has a beautiful transfer that can be seen on Filmstruck.com. We also got the chance to see 1987's "Predator" on the big screen in advance of the sequel coming out this weekend. Judging from the critic's reviews of the new one, it's abysmal...and they're completely wrong about it. "The Predator" from writer/director Shane Black was a blast, one of the most fun gore fests to grace the screen in a long time. Disregard everything negative you're hearing about it, and just go see it for yourselves.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-298402626 Mike Dietrich's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/mike.dietrich.art/ Nothing Left Song for Y'All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0r5JiU00c

  • "The Basement", "The Domestics", "Slice", "Novitiate", and "Eden Lake"

    13/09/2018 Duración: 47min

On this episode, Andrew takes a look at a new B-Horror film with a limited theatrical release this weekend, "The Basement" starring Mischa Barton. It may be a bit close to last year's "Split", but damn was it entertaining.  "The Domestics" was another really good Grindhouse type film that came out earlier this summer, and one that is an excellent choice on VOD right now.  "Slice" is a new Comedy/Horror(?) that comes to streaming this weekend. Many will probably like it, but Andrew might not be counted amongst their club.  After watching the Religsploitation film "The Nun", Jess and Andrew thought that it was a good idea to catch up with their Catholic Lore with "Novitiate". This episode is rounded out with some good old fashioned nihilism with Michael Fassbender in "Eden Lake", another in a series of films that ensures Jess will never have children.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://so

  • "The Nun", "Blood Fest", "Five Fingers for Marseilles", "Boarding School": A New Release Episode

    10/09/2018 Duración: 51min

This week, Jess got dragged to see the new Religsploitation movie that dominated the box office; "The Nun". Unfortunately, this was the only movie Jess was able to attend, so you're stuck with Andrew for "Blood Fest" (VOD), "Five Fingers for Marseilles" (Limited Theaters, VOD), and "Boarding School" (VOD). It's a shame that Jess was only able to join us for "The Nun", as the others were also really good, but that was a damn good conversation.  Please check out our Poster Giveaway Contest: https://www.andrewwatchesmovies.com/single-post/2018/09/10/Poster-Giveaway-910-916AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-298402626 Mike Dietrich's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/mike.dietrich.art/ Nothing Left Song for Y'All https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0r5JiU00c

  • Peppermint Review and interview with John Ortiz

    08/09/2018 Duración: 33min

*Stay after the review for an interview with John Ortiz, who was one of the stars of the film. Huge thank you to Greg Srisavasdi from DeepestDream.com and the podcast CinemAddicts for setting the interview up. I'm very grateful for the opportunity.*  Jess and I have seen the low reviews for the film, and could not disagree with them more. On our podcast she gave it 4 out of 5 stars, and I gave it 3.5 out of 5. Both of those would be positive reviews from some picky moviegoers. We were both distressed to see how low the other critics have this; almost like they entered their screenings with their minds already made up, and just needed to fill in a couple blanks for their snarky reviews. I don’t normally put out a plea for moviegoers to straight up disregard critics on a film, but I am here. “Peppermint” was a blast if you’re looking for some quality entertainment this weekend that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but also doesn’t ignore economic issues, or injustices that happen to regular people. I’m pretty

  • "Office Horror Trilogy", "Turbo Kid", "Heathers", "Inland Empire"

    06/09/2018 Duración: 01h03min

On this episode of Andrew Watches Movies, Andrew goes on a quest to find a horror movie the equivalent of "Office Space", believing the corporate environment is one rife with horror opportunity for fun horror plots. This journey involves "Severance" (Shudder), "Mayhem" (Shudder), and "The Belko Experiment" (Showtime).  Andrew also takes a suggestion from friend of the show Brad, and checks out Turbo Kid (Netflix), an earlier film from the makers of "Summer of '84". Jess was able to take a break from her studies to join in for a discussion on a more modern classic, "Heathers" (Shudder, Netflix), and to pay off the wheel for "Inland Empire". *Inland Empire was a long movie for Jess and her classes, so we will remain one week behind. "The Great Dictator" will be on next week's show, and a new wheel will come from there. For new listeners this is gibberish, and I apologize* AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's So

  • "Juliet, Naked", "What Keeps You Alive", "The Little Stranger": A New Release Episode.

    03/09/2018 Duración: 39min

"Juliet, Naked", "What Keeps You Alive", "The Little Stranger": A New Release Episode. Join Jess and Andrew for another trip to the Cineplex. This week, Jess was stuck in the books, so Andrew ended up seeing a couple of these alone. This doesn't mean Jess isn't a part of the conversation, though. Like with Solo, Andrew explains "Juliet, Naked" to Jess, as she has an opinion on the type of film "Juliet" turned into, and the trend in film that is similar to it.  Andrew also saw the new IFC Midnight movie solo at the Arena Cinelounge. This was the best of the three films, and it's a real shame Jess didn't get a chance to see it. Can't wait for it to come to VOD so she can experience it too. Jess's film of the weekend was "The Little Stranger". Judging by the attendance in our screening, we were some of the very few who saw this film. The audience may have been smarter than us for avoiding it.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Andre

  • Happy Gillmore, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Graham Skipper Trilogy

    30/08/2018 Duración: 57min

*We still owe you a wheel. Jess really wants to participate in Inland Empire, but won't be able to until Saturday. That will be put out in a standalone episode on Tuesday of next week.  On this episode, Jess and Andrew explore a trilogy of independent films on Shudder and Netflix. Each is starring Graham Skipper, an interesting actor who caught our eye, and grew on us while watching the films. Almost Human and The Mind's Eye are both streaming on Shudder, Beyond the Gates is on Netflix. We had a blast watching all of them.  We also explore 2 classic films. YES! BOTH OF THESE ARE CLASSICS. The Postman Always Rings Twice is on Filmstruck, and Happy Gillmore is on Netflix. We hope you enjoy the conversations on both.  AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-298402626 Mike Dietrich's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/mike.dietrich.art/ Nothing Left Song for Y'All https://w

  • Skate Kitchen, The Wife, We The Animals, Searching, and BuyBust: A New Release Episode

    27/08/2018 Duración: 01h04min

Join Jess and Andrew on their newest adventure to the Cineplex. On this episode, we catch you all up on a few movies that may have fallen through the cracks as Jess begins graduate school. Buybust, The Wife, and We The Animals have all been stuck in our heads since seeing them about a week ago, and we had to let you all know about them before they're gone. We also took in a double feature at theaters across town from each other. We had to see Skate Kitchen in the theater, and are glad we made the journey. Searching was opening, and we wanted to see that before life got in the way. Both were very rewarding, and we think the conversations around them were entertaining, and fun for us at the very least.    AndrewWatchesMovies.com Film diary:  https://letterboxd.com/andrewmartin/films/diary/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndrewWatchesTV Moses's Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-298402626 Mike Dietrich's Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/mike.dietrich.art/ Nothing Left Song for Y'All https://www.youtube.c

  • Support the Girls-- Review and Interviews with Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, and Shayna McHayle

    23/08/2018 Duración: 30min

This is a little bit of a different episode of Andrew Watches Movies. On this episode, Andrew was sent on assignment by Greg Srisavasdi of Deepestdreem.com and the podcast CinemAddicts to interview Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, and Shayna McHayle at an undisclosed location in Beverly Hills. The video for this will be on the website AndrewWatchesMovies.com in a bit, but an isolated segment (probably the best one) is on DeepestDream.com right now. Andrew is extremely grateful for being able to share this with you, and for being sent to get the interviews in the first place. Small town upbringing, big dreams.  Sandwiched in between the interviews is a review of this film from Jess and Andrew. Spoiler: They both want you to Support This Movie! • Summer of '84, Crazy Rich Asians, The Miseducation of Cameron Post: A New Release Episode

    20/08/2018 Duración: 45min

Join Jess and Andrew on their adventures to the cineplex. This week, we checked out the surprisingly wonderful Summer of '84. We wish it were playing wider, but it will be on VOD on the 24th. We made our way to the huge hit of the weekend, Crazy Rich Asians, and I took a solo trip to see "The Miseducation of Cameron Post". We hope you enjoy the episode as much as we enjoyed seeing the films.

  • Take Shelter, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Small Town Crime, Grave of the Fireflies, Barton Fink

    16/08/2018 Duración: 01h05min

Join Jess and Andrew as we explore some older films that are either streaming, or available on physical media. This week we watched Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain in Take Shelter, We took a trip to the theater to watch the Iranian set vampire film "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, and stayed home for the Netflix film Small Town Crime. We chose a classic animation film that happened to be playing in theaters this week with "Grave of the Fireflies", and paid off the wheel with "Barton Fink". We had fun making this episode, so we hope you have a good time listening to it.
