The day starts as any other onboard Red Dwarf with Kryten receiving a multitude of orders from the other three. Later on, Kryten discovers they've located Lister's guitar, previously flushed out into deep space. The crew, though with a very reluctant Rimmer and Cat included, take Starbug over to retrieve it. Once they do, they're taken in by a far larger and greatly intimidating vessel, who get the drop on the crew when they enter; the black beret-adorned mechanoids only take Lister, Rimmer, and Cat as prisoners, however, as they warmly take in Kryten as one of their own. The other three are placed into devices against their will, which one-by-one, transfers their essences into mechanoids resembling themselves. They are informed by the MILF, Areto, that they'll serve as their slaves as Kryten once was to them, and any possibility of refusal will prove impossible. After completing the first crewed mission to orbit Venus, astronaut Jeff Barton returns to Earth with recurring nightmares and an increasing inability to stay warm. Barton's condition continues to worsen and is accompanied by a peculiar webbing of his fingers. Only after his nightmares become more vivid does he recall an unrevealed alien encounter in the Venusian atmosphere. Barton's doctors suspect the astronaut had been genetically affected by his mission, and they then struggle to treat and cure him before his mutations completely take over.

Sport Sharewood and her younger brother Jeb live in a large, expensive house, but their parents are cold, ill-tempered, self-centered, and constantly bickering with each other.
