  • Texas Tech and Big 12 Media Days - 024

    20/07/2018 Duración: 01h17min

Christmas in July! We discuss our favorite Christmas movies and how Die Hard is definitely a Christmas movie.  Tim Tadlock was named D1Baseball Coach of the Year. Gabe Holt received yet another honor for his 2018 campaign as he was selected to Baseball America's First Team Freshman All-American Team. Two more basketball players have signed professional contracts overseas. Chris Beard also was overseas to see Davide Moretti play for the Italian national team.  Big 12 Media Days was this week and Texas Tech was represented by Dakota Allen, Travis Bruffy, JaDeion High and JahShawn Johnson. Tech had three players (all defensive) selected to the Preseason All Big 12 team and a certain Texas homer is butthurt about it. We also talk about the episode of the Comeback S2N podast where hosts Erik Burkhart and Johnny Manziel interview Kliff Kingsbury.  Unfortunately, Gabe Rivera passed away and we talk about what a generational talent he was, even though none of us were able to see him play in person.  See Privacy Poli

  • Independence Day, Baseball Wrap, Summer Basketball, and Football Rule Changes - 023

    11/07/2018 Duración: 01h32min

After celebrating this country's Independence Day, we discuss all things 23 for this the 23rd episode of the 23 Personnel Podcast.  The deadline for drafted baseball players to sign with their teams has come and gone and all but one player has signed with their team and will not return - Caleb Killian.  Summer basketball is in full swing and Zhaire Smith is continuing to kill it. The Texas Tech basketball staff has been completed and they continue to add players to this year's recruiting class. We even talk about high level recruits and how we as fans are going to have to accept antics like announcement videos with these types of players.  As we're nearing only 50 days until the 2019 football season kicks off, we talk about the surge of recruits Tech has been able to land lately, some NCAA rule changes (including transfers and redshirts), Big 12 Media Days, and additional bowls added to the 2020 season. We're starting to plan the fantasy, head-to-head draft and we'll likely host the draft "live" on the podcas

  • Baseball in Omaha Wrap Up, NBA Draft, and Bill Connelly - 022

    27/06/2018 Duración: 01h52min

As summer has officially started this week, we start off by discussing our favorite flavors of ice cream.  We put a bow on the 2018 baseball season. The Red Raiders finished their season in Omaha with a record of 45-20. In my book, any baseball season that ends in Omaha is a good one. There is nothing to be disappointed about with how this season turned out and we have nothing but high expectations of this team moving forward.  We also discuss the NBA Draft as Texas Tech had their first ever one and done player in Zhaire Smith. Keenan Evans and Zach Smith also landed on NBA summer teams.  The 2018 football season predictions and projections season starts off with Bill Connelly's not-so-rosy outlook for the Red Raiders.  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

  • Super Regional Mailbag - 021b

    07/06/2018 Duración: 01h55s

In this week's mailbag, we answer whether or not Tech is a football school, or something else. 7:46 We build the Mt Rushmore of Tech athletics, which Spencer is terrible at. 15:54 Tadlock must be some kind of wizard as he balances recruiting high school and JUCO talent that could very well not end up in school because of the MLB draft. 24:51 Assuming Kingsbury is not retained after the 2018 season, who are our reasonable candidates to fill the head coaching role at Tech. 39:37 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

  • Super Regional Hosts and Preview - 021

    06/06/2018 Duración: 01h27min

McDonald rejoins the podcast and brings it with an interesting intro topic this week of what TV/movie world would we like to live in.  Texas Tech general news and notes, including Women's Tennis recruiting class ranked no. 3 in the country, an excellent longform read on the corruption at Ole Miss, the coffee/caffeine nap to power through a full Saturday of college football, and Big 12 revenue - 13:18 Football offseason ranking articles have started and we look at two specifically, where the Tech linebackers rank in the conference and the strength of the non-conference schedule compared to the rest of the Big 12 - 33:07 Baseball is set to host another Super Regional this upcoming weekend - Tech's 3rd in 5 years. We preview the Duke Blue Devils and how we think Tech will fare. We also look into the draft and how it's picking this 2018 team apart - 46:36 Everybody's favorite segment: Going Yard - 1:13:34 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#d

  • Tech Set to Host Regional Tournament - 020

    30/05/2018 Duración: 01h23min

Texas Tech is gearing up to host a regional tournament against Louisville, Kent State, and New Mexico State. WIth Tech's position as the number one seed and limited starting pitching depth, we think they should probably pitch the series backwards and take advantage of playing the no. 4 seed. The basketball recruiting class should be finalized soon with three players left on the board with probably two spots left. Preston asks why Kingsbury can't seem to recruit well and we decide he just needs to win more to help that out.  We actually answer listener questions in this episode, including why Tadlock started Sublette in the Big 12 tournament, what might be wrong with Davis Martin, and if we'll see that in the regional. McDonald asks how excited we are for Cavs v Warriors, round 4. Hint: not at all.  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

  • Sausage Wrap with White Bread? - 019 Mailbag

    24/05/2018 Duración: 01h10min

Movement on the new Texas Tech Vet School going up in Amarillo and A&M shaking in their boots. Here are the articles we referenced in the recording:  http://www.amarillo.com/news/local-news/2018-03-08/tamu-unveils-vet-education-plan-w t-texas-tech-continues-push-amarillohttp://www.amarillo.com/news/20180518/texas-tech-regents-give-nod-to-69m-agreement-with-amarillo-edc-on-vet-school/1  Proper bread product to put around sausages for sausage wraps.  Pitching rotation for conference tournament.  Which WR and RBs have the most catches for Tech in 2018.  Chris Beard is a super human, but does he wear a cape? • Baseball's Unwritten Rules, Texas Tech Graduation, and Big 12 Baseball Tournament - 019

    23/05/2018 Duración: 01h16min

The unwritten rules in baseball are discussed after watching Kody Clemens break them in a win over TCU this past weekend. Here are our top 10:  Don’t talk to a pitcher about a no-hitter in progress Don’t steal or bunt when game is out of hand (4+ runs either way) Don’t “pimp” (admire) a homerun (look at, bat flip, celebrate around bases, etc.) Don’t show up the umpire or teammates Don’t stare down a batter after a strikeout Don’t step on the pitcher’s mound Don’t bunt to break up a no hitter Don't run up the score in a blowout Don’t slide hard into second with your cleats up (DO) Hit batters in retribution Do you like the unwritten rules? Did we miss some? Tell us! Texas Tech held their spring commencement ceremonies this past weekend and there were 41 Red Raider athletes graduating. Congrats! The baseball team will be up in Bricktown for the Big 12 Baseball Tournament this week and we dicsuss the Red Raiders' pitching rotation and bracket matchups.  This week in Going Yard we talk about pulling weeds and bre

  • What Makes a Texan, Disappointing Baseball Slump, Football Win Totals - 018

    09/05/2018 Duración: 01h16min

After returning from a trip to the Pacific Northwest, Spencer and Michael compile a list of things that make Texans unique and special. We determined that you need to at least check off 10 items on the list of 15: Knows pecan is the state tree Like pecan pie Knows mockingbirds are the state birds Hates mockingbirds Owns a pickup Has visited the Alamo Unhealthy obsession with queso Owns/flies “Come and Take It” flag Primarily eats ranch dressing on salads and as a dip Knows to wave on FM roads and smaller Opens doors All carbonated beverages are called “cokes” Texas chili does not have beans Love of TexMex and brisket Frito Pie, bean dip, Big Red Let us know what items you check off and what we may have missed.  The baseball team is unfortunately in the midst of a crippling slump that may see the season end much too soon if the momentum isn't turned. The talent is there for a run in Omaha, but the team will need to be much more consistent to even make it out of the regional stage.  Win totals were released fo

  • Week 17 Mailbag - 017

    26/04/2018 Duración: 01h01min

We start this week's mailbag with building the best ever Tech offense from players in Tech history (1 QB, 1 RB, 5 WR). We discuss which team had better position groups: 2017 or 2018. We talk about how the defense might fare without a key player or two. And finally, we discuss the hypothetical of giving up all other sports if it were to guarantee a national championship.  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

  • Top 3 School Cafeteria Foods, a New Wrinkle in the Football Running Game, and Baseball with 3 Conference Series To Go - 017

    25/04/2018 Duración: 01h06min

We rank our top three school cafeteria foods from elementary school. Michael had much more fond memories of cafeteria food growing growing up than Spencer did. We both listed the weird shapes of pizza we were served, but our other items were much different.  After rewatching the Spring Football Game, Spencer noticed that the offensive line typically was pulling a lineman. We don't remember Tech doing this as often prior to this season, so this may be something new to watch for this season as Tech may be more heavily relying on the run game.  Baseball won the series against OU and move up into second place in the conference. WIth series still remaining on the road against a depleted TCU team, home vs Texas, and on the road in Stillwater, Tech has their work cut out for them if they have plans on three-peating as Big 12 conference champs.  See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

  • Mailbag with Seth C

    20/04/2018 Duración: 01h01min

Seth hung around for the mailbag edition of this week's episode to answer some tough questions about the QB race, football position groups, best situation for Zhaire Smith, Chris Beard possibly putting pressure on Kingsbury to succeed and if Tech in '15/'16 would have had a bigger impact with Michael Crabtree on that team or if DeAndre Washington was on the '08 team. Who is the favorite in the QB race heading into the fall? Is there a chance we'll be relying on our amazing defense to carry the football team through the fall to a bowl game? Does the success that Beard has had with MBB put even more pressure on KK to produce this year or else? What position group got you most excited about their future? Which #NBA team/roster is best fit for Zhaire Smith? Bigger impact: sophomore Crabtree on Mahomes '15 squad or senior DeAndre Washington on Harrell '08 squad? what's a college stadium/game that's on your bucket list to see? • Seth C joins to Talk Zhaire Smith Declaring, Baseball Scoring 76 Runs, and Spring Football Wrap - 016

    19/04/2018 Duración: 01h11min

Seth C of StakingthePlains.com joins us to discuss Zhaire Smith announcing that he will be signing with an agent and officially declare for the NBA draft. We wish him nothing but success as he pursues dreams of playing in the Association.  The baseball team took full advantage of poor teams and pitching these past four games as they plated 76 runs. Josh Jung, Grant Little, Cody Farhat, Michael Davis, Cameron Warren and Zach Rheams all mashed homeruns this weekend. Grant Little tied the school record for RBIs in a single game at 9, while Brian Klein tied the school record for runs scored. Josh Jung hit for the Red Raiders' first cycle since 2008 against New Mexico on Tuesday.  Spring football came to an end with the spring game this past weekend. Seth, Michael, LaBarre and Spencer watched the game together and we discussed the positions we were most impressed and excited for. We think Tech will rely more on the defense and the run game this season rather than the QB and receivers. The Big 12 might not have the

  • Mailbag Edition of 015 - Best Condiment, Favorite Cooking Tool, New Restaurants, and Sports!

    12/04/2018 Duración: 51min

We don't know why LaBarre's food takes are such trash, but we talk about our favorite food condiments and how his are disgusting. It's easily hot sauce (not salsa) and homemade ranch.  Brian asks what our favorite cooking tools are and we decided meat thermometers (Michael's is wireless - he boujy) and special pans.  New Market Streets are opening with bars (beer, wine and chicken wings) and if we would consider moving to be closer to one - yes.  What new restaurants are on our list and how we might need to make a visit to Durango's.  There is an upcoming vote on the building formerly known as the City Bank Coliseum and how we both think Lubbock should drop and and Tech should build something, anything, in its place. Preferably something that doesn't lose $600,000 a year.  And sports questions including if HCKK will wear sunglasses and a hat to his next indoor interview, how we can bring Gingery back for his senior season, how likely Zhaire is to leave Tech, and how the Tech baseball team might be able to thr

  • New Coaches for Basketball, Baseball and Tadlock Gets Ejected, and Football Scrimmages - 015

    11/04/2018 Duración: 01h55s

Michael is rejoining the kids this week as he purchased his first gaming console in a decade.  Every week it feels like we say we're going to wrap up the basketball season, but news comes out every week that needs to be discussed. This week, the Chris Ogden to UTA deal was finalized and he was officially hired to lead their basketball program. We wish Coach Ogden the very best of luck. Zhaire Smith is still being projected to go in the first round of the NBA draft and we talk about how he's likely gone. Recruiting never stops for Beard and his staff as they picked up a commitment from one of the best graduate transfers out there in Tariq Owens. Owens is a very versatile big man and we think he'll fit right in with what Beard is trying to build at Tech.  The baseball team wraps up their 4-game road trip in Dallas against DBU. The umpires unfortunately take over the game and gift DBU two runs to help them take the lead. Tensions boiled over and Tim Tadlock is ejected, as well as Cody Masters. Over the weekend,

  • Most UnTexan Attribute, Basketball Season Ends in Elite Eight, Football News, & Baseball Back on Track - 013

    28/03/2018 Duración: 01h28min

Is drinking unsweet tea the most unTexan thing you can do? Or is it liking Pepsi? What about NOT hating on New Mexico? Unfortnately, the basketball season ended with the Red Raiders being elimated in the Elite Eight matchup versus Villanova. Both Spencer and Michael think Nova is the best team left and will likely win the national championship. Keenan Evans reveals he actually broke his toe in the game against Baylor and was playing through the pain. Is Keenan Evans the best basketball player of all-time for Texas Tech? The answer is more difficult than you would think.  The football team had an open practice/scrimmage in Midland this past Saturday, but the news didn't end there. Four players were arrested Sunday morning after an incident at Bash Riprocks. The players are still on the team but have been suspended indeifnitely. This certainly makes the battle for the starting QB position interesting, especially the longer the suspension is to last.  The baseball team had a bounce back weekend as they hosted No

  • INSTANT REACTION - Texas Tech Advances Into the Elite Eight after a 78-65 Win Over Purdue

    24/03/2018 Duración: 20min

Chris Beard defeats Purdue...AGAIN. Beard was the coach at Arkansas-Little Rock when they knocked out the Boilermakers in a 12-over-5 upset.   Texas Tech advances to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Tech takes down Purdue 78-65 in pretty convincing fashion. Tech got to a 5-point halftime lead and never let up. The Red Raiders closed the first half on a 10-0 run and kept the pressure on Purdue the entire second half.  Justin Gray was HUGE in this game, scoring 12 points and grabbing 7 boards. Keenan Evans played a solid game, scored a little under his season average but 3 other Red Raiders scored in double figures around him. Such an impressive win all the way around. These guys are making history, getting hot and riding momentum in the right direction at the right time.  Texas Tech is set to take on Villanova on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. for a shot to advance to the Final Four in San Antonio.    See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/

  • Sweet Sixteen, Baseball Roadtrip Comes to an End and Spring Football Position Battles - 011

    20/03/2018 Duración: 01h23min

A new barbecue place opened recently in the 806 and we grabbed lunch there to give it a try. Green chiles were everywhere, meat was decent. Our verdict was that it was OK but there are some other pretty fine joints in town to get the 'cue. There was also some discussion on what needs sauce and what doesn't and who makes the best sauces (Whataburger, obviously).  Texas Tech opened the NCAA tournament with wins over Stephen F Austin and Florida. Both games saw exciting plays from guards Keenan Evans and Zhaire Smith (who might be leaving after this season). Smith flying through the air for 360 dunks and alley oops are just things of beauty.  Tech is getting ready to face Purdue in Boston in the Sweet Sixteen. The Boilermakers may be without their senior big man, Isaac Haas. He broke his elbow in the first round against CSU Fullerton and nearly gave it a go in the round of 32 game. His brace was disallowed by the NCAA and it's unlikely he will play again this season. Good news for Purdue is they have another big
