No, really. He's an evil character with no real redemptive arc. He just goes along with things and destroys the ring accidentally through his own desire to own it! What do you mean you didn't know that? The book is 68-9 years old and the last movie came out almost 20 years ago, it's not a spoiler anymore! Next you'll be saying you never knew Rosebud was a sled and the cake was a lie! Ah, who am I kidding - nobody reads this anyway!
