A Clare sporting legend is to be honoured in the US next month. ‘Honest John’ Purcell is set to be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Olympic Club of San Francisco. The Barefield athlete is regarded as one of the world’s greatest all-round track and field athlete during the 1880s. His world titles in the hop-step-and-jump and long jump led to him becoming a household name at home in Ireland, as well as the UK, Canada, and the United States. Members of the Purcell family will travel to attend the ceremony on the 9th of October.
