A Clare Fianna Fáil TD has defended his party's presidential election candidate selection process which he says isn't a "police force" but admits members "feel let down". Jim Gavin has backed out of the race for the Áras following reports that he owes a former tenant €3,300. Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher, who sought the party's nomination in August, has described the debacle as a "very serious miscalculation by the party leadership, while its Deputy Leader Jack Chambers says there'll be a meeting to "discuss the campaign". Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he believed in his "heart and soul" that Jim Gavin was the right man for the job.
