Topic covered on today's episode of Mind Set Daily "Blimp in a Box" The U.S. military has developed a surveillance blimp that fits in a box that can be loaded onto the back of a truck trailer. As its currently configured, JLENS can reach an altitude of 10,000 feet and stay aloft for 30 days at a stretch, and its 360 degree sensor package can scan the air, land, and sea for up to 340 miles. Because of the low cost to deploy the unmanned blimps and the even lower cost of keeping them in the air, the system provides a far more durable and economical means of overhead radar surveillance for a military base or operation. Radar systems on the ground have problems detecting objects beneath a certain height. It’s not just for the military either. It could be used for pipeline monitoring, extra security at the World Cup or even by a police force. It would also be useful in disaster areas, where the normal communications networks are down.
