Launched in 2004, Facebook has exploded to a reported 1.71 billion active users. Facebook’s stated purpose is to help users “connect and share” with the people in their lives. The ubiquity of Facebook and other social media, and the fact that the expressed purpose of social media is to “share” about ourselves, our life and our interests gives Christians the opportunity—and the responsibility—to ask ourselves a very important question. Christ is called the Prince of Peace. Jesus Christ preached peace. Many think that He came to bring peace on earth. But, right up to present times, no true or lasting peace exists on earth. When I was a youngster, we lived close to a blacksmith’s shop. The smith was a man trained to take a piece of metal, heat it, beat it and cool it—thereby producing needed and useful articles. His tools were simple, his strength was great and his eye was keen. The blacksmith’s implements were few: a hammer, anvil and forge. His forge was used to produce heat; his anvil was a large piece of solid metal to pound on with the hammer. Some expressions in the vernacular, that is “words used on the street,” express an idea in a way that more formal expressions just can’t match. In the recent movie Arrival, enormous spaceships settle in the atmosphere above twelve locations around the world. There is a purpose for the coming of the visitors from an extraterrestrial place—but that purpose remains unknown! Like most boys born in the last few decades, my sons love Star Wars. Each new movie is greeted with enthusiasm, and Rogue One is no exception. As a fan of the movies myself, I usually look forward to sharing this cultural experience with them. Nevertheless, Rogue One gave me some pause as the reviews described it being a darker story and more focused on war than on the more traditional coming-of-age narrative that Star Wars usually focuses on.
