When I was in my twenties, I would take the opportunity to visit my paternal grandmother on a Friday night. During these special visits, my grandmother would feed me a delicious meal as we talked sitting at her dining room table. Not long ago, a friend and I stood on a mountain crest located on the Cumberland Plateau. Before us were broad grassy meadows, created from land that had been strip-mined. Although major damage had been done to the land through clear-cutting of timber and strip-mining, reclamation was producing positive results. Many are familiar with the phrase “deliver us from evil,” which is part of the Lord’s Prayer. There is a reason this phrase was included in the model prayer given by Jesus Christ. Do you feel safe? Most do not, as is evidenced by the actions of many who are taking extra precautions to ensure the personal safety of themselves and their family members. For thousands of years, mankind has been fascinated with the roles of real or imagined conspiracies in the lives of individuals and societies. It's no different today. When we look at the evils and failings of our present Western societies, it's easy to wonder if some variety of conspiracies are involved in perpetuating things as they are. The rich seem to get richer; the poor seem only to get poorer. Food prices rise rapidly; gasoline prices rise even faster. Could it be that some master "Oz" character hides behind the curtains somewhere, manipulating prices for the benefit of some cabal of the rich and powerful? Scripture tells us what our Savior did to acquire spiritual strength, in connection with the devil's attack on Him: "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted [or tried] by the devil. What is communion? Scripture explains that the Passover is the communion of the blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:16), that light has no communion with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14) and that the saints have communion with God and Christ through the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14). Some use the term to describe a relationship to God that Christians generally enjoy because of the grace of Christ. I believe in the risen Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior of mankind. I believe that after His crucifixion on Passover, He was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth—as He said He would be. I believe He was then resurrected by His Father, restored to the glory He had with His Father before the world was.
