It was simply a trip to a major retail bookseller with a friend who wanted to pick up a book. Who knew it would be an eye-opening experience? Unless you go to movie theaters, watch a lot of popular television shows, or peruse the popular books at your favorite retailer, you may not be aware of the current obsession involving vampires, zombies, and other macabre subjects and creatures. As I walked through the sprawling store, there was a huge display of books under a large sign with the heading “Paranormal Romance.” Other sections had other similar categories of books and games with the themes of the “living dead” and other demonic characterizations. Some Christian denominations attract members by offering a “feel-good religious experience,” complete with an upbeat message, live Christian rock music, encouragement to indulge in fits of emotion, and requiring little in the way of commitments. All around the world, faithful Christians are preparing to celebrate the great Feast that Jesus Christ and the apostles observed two millennia ago. Many of you are aware that Jews around the world are about to observe the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur in the Hebrew language. It is a day of fasting during which Jews all around the world abstain totally from food and water for a full 24 hours, humbling themselves before God. Many historians have written about the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. From Edward Gibbon’s epic work to modern books on the subject, numerous reasons are offered for Rome’s decline that offer interesting parallels to America’s declining power and prestige. Could America also fall?

A popular syndicated television and radio personality once related a conversation that he had with a well-known billionaire philanthropist. While watching a classic epic movie from the 1960s, I was surprised when, about halfway through the film, there was an intermission. I suppose the directors figured the audience needed a brief break before the lengthy production resumed to complete the story. In live theater productions and at the symphony, an intermission is often provided before the actors again take the stage and continue the performance. People who love the Bible know that many of its scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, reference songs, singing, and music. Praising God in song is a beautiful and enjoyable way to express love, adoration, and gratitude, along with appropriate emotion, to God the Father—and sometimes can even be a healthy way to express sorrow and sadness. Shepherds of old carried a rod and a staff, two important tools of their trade. For the shepherd, a rod was a stick or club that could be used offensively or defensively against a threat to himself or his flock. It was also used for discipline and counting, especially to determine the tithe of the increase of a flock (Leviticus 27:32). The shepherd’s staff was a longer and thinner stick with a hook on one end, used for guiding the flock and for capturing or saving sheep. The importance of growing food and fiber for a burgeoning population is often lost on city- and suburb-dwellers. Yet, as troubled times bring rising food costs and commodity shortages, people may focus more attention on the details of production, processing, and distribution of basic agricultural necessities, including vegetable produce, poultry, meat, and dairy products. It all starts with the soil, which must be tilled and cultivated to bring a successful harvest. Today, most farming has been mechanized and takes place on large-scale operations, but historically it all started with the plow on small family farms. The tiniest spark of fire can grow quickly into a raging inferno, consuming thousands of acres of forest or whole blocks of buildings. My first stint as a counselor at one of my church’s youth camps in Texas provoked me to deep thought. At a “Pride Event” hosted by and held at the White House on June 10, 2023, an appalling and shocking scene unfolded. A biological male with hormonally augmented breasts, believing himself to be a “transgender woman,” went topless, revealing his artificial chest while jumping up and down. He was joined by biological females who called themselves “transgender men,” who had undergone surgery wherein their natural breasts had been removed.
