    A Clare sporting legend is to be honoured in the US next month. ‘Honest John’ Purcell is set to be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Olympic Club of San Francisco. The Barefield athlete is regarded as one of the world’s greatest all-round track and field athlete during the 1880s. His world titles in the hop-step-and-jump and long jump led to him becoming a household name at home in Ireland, as well as the UK, Canada, and the United States. Members of the Purcell family will travel to attend the ceremony on the 9th of October.   • West Clare Nurse Sounds Alarm Over Lack Of Dental Care

    A West Clare nurse has sounded the alarm over a lack of dental care in rural areas. As of January, there were just six dental practices here partaking in the medical card scheme, while it's understood that just 8 private facilities are available outside of Ennis. According to the Irish Dental Association meanwhile, two-thirds of practices nationwide are struggling to recruit staff. Kilmurry McMahon based Aontú Rep June Dillon claims the sector is at a tipping point.

    93 Clare citizens have penned an open letter to this county's four TDs seeking multi-million euro investment in youth services. The letter, seen by Clare FM states that "youth services are under real pressure and that the cost of living, years of funding and rising demand are making it harder". The National Youth Council of Ireland is seeking an increased investment of €21.3m in Budget 2026 to enhance youth work. Spokesperson Daniel Meister says the demand in Clare is clear.

    There's calls for enhanced air ambulance resources in the MidWest in order to increase Clare's emergency cover. New HSE figures show there were 51 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service responses in this county last year, marking a 25% jump on 2023's total. While between this January and May alone, there were a further 18 call outs in Clare. HSE Regional Health Forum West member and Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney says the more availability the better.

    A Clare senator claims people with disabilities still aren't living lives "equal to those of their peers". Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway has called for debate on the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025 to 2030, which was launched by the Government this month. It's his second contribution in Seanad Éireann since resigning from the Fine Gael parliamentary party in February of this year. Speaking in the Seanad, Senator Conway says any new strategy must ensure people with disabilities have access to the services and supports they need.

    A Clare TD says the Government has been caught napping on regulating vapes and e-cigarettes. According to the Institute of Public Health, 18% of 15-16 year-olds are current users. The state is currently moving to ban the advertising of e-cigarettes and restrict packaging design, but Sinn Féin is calling for an anti-vaping programme to be established, along with legislation to outlaw disposable and single-use products. The Party's Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Shannon Deputy McGettigan says there's serious problems.

    A Clare MEP has questioned if political lobbying is the cause of proposed amendments to new artificial intelligence laws. The Artificial Intelligence Act is a European Union regulation which came into force on August 1st 2024 and establishes a common regulatory and legal framework for AI within the European Union. The provisions of the act are coming into effect gradually and will all be in operation within 36 months of the act's introduction. Speaking in the European Parliament, Scariff-based Independent MEP Michael McNamara says it's highly unusual to propose amending legislation in its infancy.

    Korey Power is from county Cork. He started to fall in love with music at very young age from doing karaoke on holidays and finding his voice he realised he could sing from getting a bit of reaction from the audience abroad . Eventually he started to learn to play instruments and fell in love with the guitar, that's when he also started to write songs. He loved doing covers over the years but he thinks there's something very special about having your own song out there in the world. Over the years he started to build a huge following online over all my social media platforms and he is very grateful for it, because he knows how hard the music industry is, and is just happy to play a small part in this big world.

  • Concern Over Spreading Algal Bloom In East Clare

    Concern has been expressed in East Clare over the growing presence of an algal bloom on the shores of Lough Derg. The pea-green scum like build up can cause skin and eye irritation, gastro-intestinal illness and nausea, and can be lethal for animals, especially dogs. The algae was first identified at Ballycuggeran and Mountshannon as these areas are regularly utilised for swimming, however it's understood prevailing winds have carried it up to parts of Meelick Bay. Whitegate Fine Gael Councillor Pat Burke has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan it's vital people stay away from the affected areas.
