Sinopsis

Hi, my name is Andrew, and I watch movies. I have watched thousands of movies in my life, and enjoy writing, and talking about them. There is no discrimination based on genre or age here, I watch 'em all, and podcast about them. Sometimes, I even watch the movies with other people, and have an after movie conversations on the show. I hope everyone enjoys the evolution of this podcast, and our journey through the film world together. Let's start the conversation!

Episodios

  • The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

    31/12/2018 Duración: 48min

Contained within the Shudder streaming app is one of the strangest and darkest comedies that we have ever seen. Peter Greenaway created a unique cinematic stage play starring the eternally graceful Helen Mirren and the boarish Michael Gambon. Join Jess and Andrew for an in-depth depth discussion on the unforgettable film The Thief, The Cook, His Wife, and Her Lover"

  • A Very Joe Bob Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Home Alone

    24/12/2018 Duración: 01h01min

Merry Christmas everyone! Join Jess and Andrew for their celebration of the holiday. We aren't into the traditional Holiday classics, except Home Alone, so we watched Silent Night, Deadly Night parts 1 and 2, Better Watch Out, and A Very Joe Bob Christmas. The Joe Bob Christmas special can be streamed on Shudder and covers Phantasm parts 1, 3, 4, and 5. Just like us, Joe Bob just can't stick to Christmas.

  • The Favourite, Anna and The Apocalypse, Roma, and The House that Jack Built: A New Release Episode

    17/12/2018 Duración: 01h40min

Join Jess and Andrew on their odyssey through the cineplex. This week we got to see Yorgos Lanthimos's new film The Favourite, which is titled appropriately as it is one of our favorites of the year. If you were ever looking for a combination of the best elements of the High School Musical franchise mixed with Christmas and crossed with a kick-ass zombie film, your prayers have been answered. Anna and the Apocalypse danced its way into the theaters and our hearts.  Roma is now streaming on Netflix, but we took the opportunity to witness the beautiful imagery on the big screen. Many are touting this as their favorite of the year, do we agree?  Lastly, we were fortunate to see the Director's Cut of The House that Jack Built a few weeks ago, and watched the R-Rated MPAA cut when it was released this weekend. Lars is a filmmaker that we both connect with, so the conversation goes to some interesting places in this segment.  Time codes for segments: The Favourite 3:30 Anna and the Apocalypse 21:20 Roma 40:40 The H

  • The Vengeance Trilogy: "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance", "OldBoy", and "Lady Vengeance"

    12/12/2018 Duración: 01h04min

Right now the streaming service Shudder has one of our favorite thematic trilogies of all time in its collection. Park Chan-Wook is a Korean filmmaker that everyone should be aware of, and the best introduction to him is this series. "Sympathy for Mr. Vengance" is the first one that was made, but not necessarily the first one that needs to be watched. "OldBoy" happens to be one of the best films of all time, and the place we would suggest beginning this saga. "Lady Vengeance" displays the full evolution of Chan-Wook's style, and might be the most "fun" of the series". The violence might be brutal, but the themes are poetic. Join Andrew for a discussion on the trilogy, and stick around for a discussion about the American remake from Spike Lee with Jess.

  • "Eyes Wide Shut"

    30/11/2018 Duración: 45min

Join Jess and Andrew as they pay off their wheel assignment from last week: Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut"

  • "Border", "Cam", and "Creed 2": A New Release Episode

    29/11/2018 Duración: 48min

This week we are giving you two new release episodes on top of The Wheel coming out on Friday. Jess and Andrew got to see one of the most unique films of the year. The Swedish film "Border" is one that we will never forget, and we hope the academy also remembers it come Oscar time.  Jess and Andrew also enjoyed the new film from Blumhouse and Gunpowder and Sky collaboration "Cam." It's another film Netflix claims as an original but was just purchased by them at a festival. We highly recommend this one.  Andrew had to take a solo trip to "Creed 2", but it was a very enjoyable one. The first Creed is 99cents on Amazon, so a home and theater double feature is the best way to go.

  • "Beautiful Boy", "Bohemian Rhapsody", and "A Star is Born": A New Release Episode

    27/11/2018 Duración: 55min

Alright, we are going to get this out of the way right at the top. This episode has taken us a little bit to figure out how to release. There is a film out there that many consider a "new classic," Jess and Andrew could not stand it. A Star is Born failed on every single level for them, and the podcast is not kind to it. Forgive us the honesty. There are many positive things on the episode as well, and we placed them ahead of Star.  If you don't want to hear us bash your favorite movie of the year unrelentingly, stop listening after Beautiful Boy and Bohemian Rhapsody. Those were both loved by us, especially Bohemian. There is a nice counterpoint to be made between that and the Gaga thing. Some would jump right to the conclusion that Star is the more beloved film, but the audience scores on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes would contradict that. Join us for our reasoning here!

  • Brian De Palma's "Sisters"

    21/11/2018 Duración: 35min

Going forward, Jess and Andrew are going to release "The Wheel" as a stand-alone episode. For those who don't know, "The Wheel" is a weekly assignment that we leave to chance. We spin a prize wheel that has 18 selections on it and are told what to watch. If you have suggestions for "The Wheel", don't hesitate to send them to Andrew@andrewwatchesmovies.com. We will be picking them from the audience periodically. This week's episode is Brian De Palma's "Sisters". Currently, this is streaming on Filmstruck and Kanopy.com. If you have a library card, you have a subscription to Kanopy already. Please start using it. Their database is damned amazing.

  • The Haunting of Hill House: Episodes 6-10

    20/11/2018 Duración: 01h08min

Jess and Andrew are back! On today's episode, they continue with the Netflix saga "The Haunting of Hill House". This episode contains spoilers, so we suggest viewing first. If you don't give a fuck about a spoiler, jump right in.

  • The Haunting of Hill House: Episodes 1-5

    31/10/2018 Duración: 58min

Join Jess and Andrew as they journey through The Haunting of Hill House with the Crain family. Netflix original material isn't always great, but they hit the mark with this show. Mike Flanagan has been trying to make a "haunted drama" for much of his career, and he gets the closest to perfecting that twist on the horror genre in this piece. The first five episodes have a different tone than the last five, so this is a perfect way to break it up. We will be back next week with the rest of the series, so catch up with us and watch along.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Suspiria" 1977 Original and 2018 Remake

    31/10/2018 Duración: 36min

Happy Halloween everyone! On the last day of our 31 Films of Halloween journey, we bring you two versions of one of our favorite films of all time. Dario Argento's 1977 Suspiria was given a brilliant 4K restoration last year, and we got the chance to see it in the theater again.  The film was also remade this year by Luca Guadaguino who made last year's Call Me By Your Name. It's hard to pin down our exact feelings on this one, but we know that it's one that deserves to exist and even get a second viewing from us. When this open wide, we recommend it to open-minded viewers.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "It Follows" and "The Witch in the Window"

    30/10/2018 Duración: 37min

Join Jess and Andrew for Day 30 of their 31 Films of Halloween journey. Today we tackle a film that is very close to both of us. One of our first dates was to see "It Follows", so that will always be an unforgettable film for us. It's also one that is damn good and is streaming on Netflix. We also watched the new Shudder Original "The Witch in the Window". We are adding it to our Halloween list, so you know this one is good.

  • Channel Zero: Butchers Block

    29/10/2018 Duración: 47min

We have a bonus episode for you today. Shudder has been upping their content game this month, and just added the third season of Channel Zero. Butchers Block may not be quite on par with the other installments of the series, but it's better than 99% of the episodic television I see. On this podcast, we cover the entire season. Hope you all enjoy!

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "The Void"

    29/10/2018 Duración: 23min

Join Jess and Andrew for Day 29 of our 31 Films of Halloween journey. On today's episode, we take a step into The Void on Netflix. If you're a fan of Hellraiser dimensions, this is the film for you. It's Andrew's birthday today, so you know this pick is a special one.  A time comes in every series where it is better to abandon than trudge on. The time to jump ship from Masters of Horror is now. Andrew will let you know why in this episode.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: Revenge of the Anthology "Trick-r-Treat", "All Hallows Eve", and "Terrifier"

    28/10/2018 Duración: 35min

For Day 28 of their 31 Films of Halloween Journey, Jess and Andrew enjoy a night of Halloween hijinx with Sam in the Trick r' Treat universe. This anthology set the bar for every other modern anthology and is screaming for a sequel of its own.  A darker, lower budget anthology is also explored. In All Hallows Eve, an absolutely terrifying clown named Art was introduced. This isn't at the same level of storytelling as Trick r' Treat, but it contains some horrifying frights.  This past year, Art The Clown returned in a truly disturbing film called Terrifier. The violence in this one is extreme and has polarized audiences in the horror community. Jess and Andrew give their opinion on the gore in this sequel to All Hallows Eve.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "The Burbs" and "Masters of Horror: The Black Cat"

    27/10/2018 Duración: 31min

Halloween isn't always about scaring the shit out of ourselves with films. Sometimes a comedy set during the season can be just as festive as a horror film. For Day 27, we are watching a great comedy horror film from Joe Dante, The Burbs. Tom Hanks may not be my favorite actor in the world, but he's playing a part he was born for in this film.  Our Masters of Horror journey continues with the second contribution from Stewart Gordon. A tale about Edgar Allen Poe is just what the series needs to get back on track. The adaptation starring Jeffery Combs is just what the devil ordered.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Summer of '84" and "Masters of Horror: We All Scream for Ice Cream"

    26/10/2018 Duración: 46min

A couple of months ago, one of our favorite films of the year was given a small theatrical release. We promised to update everyone when Summer of '84 was added to a streaming platform. That day has arrived, and we are thankful to Shudder for adding it before Halloween. Summer is the perfect selection for Day 26 of our 31 Films of Halloween journey.  Most episodes of Masters of Horror are great, but not everything is perfect. I'm not going to harp too much on We All Scream for Ice Cream, but I'm not going to recommend anyone watches it either.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "American Werewolf in London" and "Masters of Horror: Valerie on the Stairs"

    24/10/2018 Duración: 28min

Beware the Moors and stick to the road for Day 24 of our 31 Films of Halloween Journey. An American Werewolf in London is one of the greatest horror films of all time, and perfect for tonight's Full Moon. Andrew also continues with Masters of Horror with Valerie on the Stairs.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Train to Busan" and "Masters of Horror: The Screwfly Solution"

    23/10/2018 Duración: 34min

For Day 23 of our 31 Films of Halloween journey, Jess and Andrew catch up on a beloved zombie film that has been a blind spot until now. Train to Busan has been talked about at length since its release and is streaming on Netflix now. Check it out with us before hits the American remake chopping block. Jess also joins Andrew for today's discussion on Master's of Horror. Joe Dante's chapter The Screwfly Experiment was a welcome surprise. It now holds the crown as our favorite of the series.

  • 31 Films of Halloween: "Return of the Living Dead" and "Channel Zero: No End House"

    22/10/2018 Duración: 01h12min

Join Jess and Andrew on their 31 Films of Halloween journey. Today, we are revisiting an old favorite. If you haven't seen Return of the Living Dead before, there is no time like the present to change that. It's streaming on Amazon now and is one of the best zombie films of all time. Pop it on, and Let's Party! Andrew also takes a journey to the No End House from Channel Zero. The season may not live up to Candle Cove but it has classic mythology in its own right. This series from CreepyPasta stories is extremely compelling, a great addition to any October viewing list.
