Raising Nashville

Like schools during a pandemic We Are Back! The dads took the summer off to learn how to adjust to home life, self reflect, and to educate ourselves on everything going on in life right now. But, all summer breaks must come to an end so we dusted off the mics and created all new episodes for our listenership. Up first is something that's on all parents minds: how to navigate remote learning. Should we send kids back to school in person? What are the pros and cons of virtual learning? Is this journey we are about to embark on considered home school? I guess we're all about to find out. So, throw in some ear buds, act like your paying attention to your kids and let us whisk a part of your day away with our ALL NEW EPISODE: Back to School.         

2020 has been an interesting year.  The Tennessee Titans ALMOST make the Super Bowl (it was a BIG deal around town folks) then we all go into lockdown for months, now we're witnessing as a large chunk of the country becomes aware that no, racism never truly went away.   Throughout all of this we've been trying to push on and put out episodes that we think our listenership would like.  But now it's time to take to take a little step back to reflect on everything that's happened so far this year and study up on some future topics.  We're taking a little break, but we'll be back later this summer with new episodes on Nashville, parenting, or just something random that we think is relevant.  Thanks for listening and we'll talk at you again soon.

Every city has that one former resident that they just wish everyone would forget.  For Nashville that person was William Walker.  No, he wasn't a failed country artist, (that would be so much better) he WAS a monster and a racist who wanted to take over a country south of the border.  And he somehow managed to convince a bunch of the 1850's versions of frat boys to join him on his expedition.  He has some successes and failures and (spoiler alert) ends up on the wrong, or right, side of a Honduran firing squad.  So join us today for a history lesson about one of Nashville's more despicable natives.  Enjoy?

Straws, buffalo, a naked person playing tambourine.  We're talking about WILD bachelorette parties on this weeks episode.   Just kidding, although that does sound pretty awesome, we're actually talking about some of the public artwork around town and the stories behind them.  Did you know the sculpture on the river is called Ghost Ballet and it is made up of parts from roller coasters from the now defunct Opryland USA? (it's not) Did you know the "pick up sticks" at the 8th Ave roundabout are based off Native American something or other?  Tune in for some facts and myths surrounding some of our cities iconic artwork and maybe learn something.

This week the guys are diving into the darker, seedy side of Nashville's history.  No, we're not talking about the prostitute barge or the hot tub bus (you know you're gross), we're talking about crimes that put Nashville on edge.  There was the murder of a Girl Scout in the Green Hills area, there was the murder of a Chart Director on Music Row, and several fast food murders in the late 90's that shook everyone. 

On this weeks episode we're talking about scouting. Boyscouts to be specific.  With so much negative news about the Boyscouts in the past year the dads decided to dive into the history of this organization and talk about some of the benefits as well as some of the scandals.    So finish sewing that Stalking pin on your vest and tune into this weeks episode of The Raising Nashville Podcast.

In early May of 2010 the city of Nashville experienced a 100, 500, 1000 year flood when over 19 inches of rain fell on the city in less than 48 hours.  On this weeks episode we dive into some stats about the flood and how it changed the city. 

Back in January Bucky, Juicebox, and Oldboy were approached by a member of their listenership with an opportunity to not only go to the Kentucky Derby, but to sit in a box.  If you know anything about the Derby you know what a big deal this is.  In honor of that invite we recorded an episode about the history of the Kentucky Derby and some of interesting celebrities that had attended over the years.  Our intention was to record the 2nd half of the podcast after attending the Derby.... welp, so much for that idea.  Instead we decided to get together and talk about some of our favorite experiences from Derby's past with the help of 17 time Kentucky Derby attendee & Juicebox's better half, Dana.  Sure this episode is a little long, but you probably have a lawn to mow or some landscaping to take care of, so crush up some fresh mint, dump some bourbon on top of it, chug it, listen to this podcast, and pretend we're actually living in a different timeline. 

On this week's episode the dads catch YOU up on what they have been doing during lock down. Has Oldboy learned how to use a bow and arrow? Has Bucky revisited a favorite pastime from his childhood involving a blow dryer? Is Juicebox (or any of us) able to balance raising a child while continuing to work? Since we are actively social distancing we thought you might want to hear some of our ideas and anecdotes as we attempt to navigate through 'the nothing.' We also reach out to a few friends of the podcast from all parts of the country to wrap our heads around the countries supply of Sour Patch kids. These calls start with simple questions but end up with some questionable choices including an oversupply of Michael Myers masks and replacing handshakes with butt slaps. You ever changed a poopy diaper?  You ever changed a poopy diaper 1500-2000 times?  Man it gets OLD. But when it comes time to start potty training it's not like you just throw away those diapers and say "here's the toilet" (well for most of us it doesn't happen that way).  On this weeks episode the dads are talking about potty training.  We'll go through a brief, somewhat confusing, timeline of the history of potty training, talk about how the age of potty training has shifted to later in a child's life, and discuss some of the general DO's and DON'Ts of potty training.  So pull up a seat on the toilet and enjoy this weeks episode of the Raising Nashville Podcast.

This week we take a short break from the Covid-19 pandemic to preview some of our favorite local Nashville podcasts.  Let's be honest, we can only listen to ourselves so much and we're sure you can too.  On this weeks episode we tie in three local podcasts that are each part of our own mission, which is dads raising children in Nashville while drinking and talking about pop-culture. Up first we find out Zeke Baker's (Dads Drinking Bourbon) favorite well bourbon then we transition into Chris Green's (99% Local Podcast) one percent. Finally Kelly Hoyle Bolick (San Dimas Today) stops by the studio to talk about everything Bill & Ted related including the upcoming film Bill & Ted Face the Music.  So whether you are a dad, bourbon drinker, not from here, or are a fan of Keanu Reeves we have something for everyone!  The interviews start off professional then turn into strange obsessions, off-beat questions and a whole lot of fun.  We also discover Oldboy has an obscure man crush.  All this and more on

A few weeks back the dads got together to record something special for their 50th episode.  They were then kicked out of the studio by their better halves, who proceeded to take over the Raising Nashville Podcast.  This week they're telling our Listenership what they do when the dads are sequestered in Juicebox's spare room, and giving you the scoop on some of their favorite spots to take your kids, and Get Crunk Like a Mutha.  Enjoy, and continue to practice social distancing y'all.

This wasn't the episode we planned on putting out.  But a lot of things changed last Wednesday, and the Coronavirus, AKA COVID-19, became front and center in everyone's mind (although it probably already should have been).  We're diving into the timeline of the spread of this virus. From when the first case was reported on December 31, up to where we are today, (well Sunday). We talk about the cascade of cancellations and closures and the effects they have on working parents.  Then, when things are at their heaviest, Bucky hits us with a Paul Walker conspiracy that leaves us all speechless.     

Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages, It's our 1 year anniversary episode! One year of speaking non-sense on parenting, Nashville and our pop-culture love. If you've lasted this long you know we've covered a bevy of topics ranging from spanking your children to McKamey Manor. We've agreed, disagreed, and discovered ourselves along the way. With that being said, this week we have something special for the city of Nashville and our loyal listenership. That's right! This week is Raising Nashville's BEST OF NASHVILLE episode! Since it's our first anniversary we decided to rank everything from exhibits at the zoo to where to take your kids when you need a drink. From birthday party venues to movies filmed in Nashville we rank them all! You can't wait to find out who our favorite special guest was...trust us!

If you're around our age you probably remember the overwhelming sensation of walking through an arcade as a kid.  Sometimes you were lucky enough to have some quarters burning a hole in your pocket, sometimes you just had to look at the game and just daydream about how much fun it probably is to play.   Well, thanks to modern cash grab based around everything nostalgic about our childhoods, Arcades are BACK!  Well kinda.  Now instead of pumping quarters into the game you're pumping expensive beers and cocktails into your system while trying to conquer that 4 player Simpsons game you never had enough money to play back in the day. NO!  Yes, on this weeks episode of the Raising Nashville Podcast we're talking about everyone's favorite period of child development, the "Terrible Two's".  And even though Oldboy claims it didn't happen with his kid (we still don't believe him) it is a real thing for most parents.  This week we're diving into some of the causes behind your kids "Terrible" actions and discuss some options you have when your kid is having that full on melt down (one of the suggestions may or may not be drugs and alcohol, for yourself of course, not the kid).  So say yes to this weeks episode of the Raising Nashville Podcast, or maybe someone needs to think about it in Time Out. 

Happy Birthday to you!  You smell like a shoe!  Yep, that's right loyal listnership, this week we are talking children's birthdays! Well, unless you're Oldboy's kid.... We give you our recommendations for Nashville's hottest birthday party venues, somehow find ourselves discussing the history of birthday parties and dive into a sad story involving Chuck E Cheese.  From headaches to party favors we're here to tell all you parents out there, you're not alone.  We also debate as parents whether you should stay at their friends birthday parties or take some much needed time to yourself. So whether you are dropping 50K on or leaving town for your kid's birthday you might want to give this episode a listen. Also, RIP Monkey Joe's...you're gone but will never be forgotten.
