“The new normal” is an idiom expressing that a significant change has occurred and become commonplace. For example, in the last few decades, it has become commonplace for us to use personal computers and cell phones to now do much of our shopping online. That is a new normal. Wrestling is a fascinating sport involving physical strength, skill, and tenacity as combatants strive to “pin” their opponents. Professional wrestling has enjoyed popularity for generations, and it garnered $748 million dollars in revenue in 2021. This form of wrestling has been considered entertainment rather than a sport because of the sometimes-bizarre personas of the participants and the pitting of “good guys” against “villains” in carefully choreographed matches. Collegiate wrestling, however, is a legitimate sport sanctioned by the NCAA; 395 colleges across the United States participate in it, and it is a popular event in the Olympic Games. Every year, especially during the “flu season,” millions of people come down with a host of preventable diseases like colds, influenza, and various respiratory infections. Most of these are considered “common” illnesses and are not as impactful as unusual outbreaks in years past of diseases like SARS and Swine Flu, not to mention the ongoing struggles with MRSA and, at the time of the initial publication of this article, the major pandemic of coronavirus—which continues to shape policy and global response. Who hasn’t seen a to-do list of some kind—on the wall, on their desk or refrigerator, or in a silly cartoon with characters hustling to get things done? Many have had their daily life or work dictated by a growing list of little checked boxes, in their heads if not on paper or a spreadsheet. “That was excruciating!” We hear this statement from individuals, or from ourselves at times, after suffering an injury like breaking a bone, hammering an ill-placed thumb rather than a nail, or stubbing a big toe on the bedpost while stumbling our way through a darkened bedroom. Charles Dickens (1812–1870), the popular, prolific author of Britain’s Victorian Age, penned a poignant introduction to his famous novel A Tale of Two Cities, published in 1859. Now that was a long time ago, yet his description of that time certainly fits this modern age. Very early in life, we graduate from nursing and baby bottles to a “sippy cup,” and then to a regular cup—although I do see many adults with “sippy cups” of hot coffee. But cups, like many other things in the Bible, are used as metaphors or symbols. A cup may be used as a symbol of intoxication and deception. “Pouring out” a cup may symbolize God’s wrath or punishment being meted out. On the positive side, a cup is also used as a symbol of blessings and salvation.

The majority of professing Christians consider Easter to be the most sacred holiday of the year, believing that it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A much-beloved Protestant hymn asserts, “This Is My Father’s World.” The song has a beautiful melody, and the sentiment is tempting. Yet, the reality of the matter—as so pointedly shown by the many sudden and destructive events caused by natural disasters—is that our world today is not our Father’s world. But, when we consider human existence itself, it’s certainly not unreasonable to ask, “What’s in it for me?” Are the risks and rewards worth it? My wife and I are currently waging a tiring, fierce, and ongoing battle of epic proportions—with our two-year-old. He notches his share of victories as we charge the trenches of teaching him the word “no,” how to feed himself without throwing or sling-shotting his food, and how to submit to the terrible monster known as “Bedtime,” and so on. In a January 11, 2024 article titled “Huge Ring of Galaxies Challenges Thinking on Cosmos,” the BBC describes how PhD student Alexia Lopez, of the University of Central Lancashire, recently discovered a gigantic, ring-shaped structure composed of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Most people have not been inside a jail. It’s not a place that anyone in their right mind wants to be. Yet, jails are filling up and new ones can’t be built fast enough. Local, state, and federal penal systems are strained beyond capacity, and they struggle for increases in their budgets to meet the demands placed upon their institutions. It seems that when opportunity knocks, many don’t recognize it, because it is disguised as work. Some think that opportunity is actually “luck.” Yet, this “luck” seems to follow those who work hard, fulfilling their obligations and commitments. With the workplace in transition because of modern methods, new technology, and changing markets, many fail to keep up with the changing times in their field and are left behind, missing opportunities. Change is relentless, and a willingness to adapt and constantly learn and train is required. This is not new, but the pace of change has accelerated dramatically—leaving many behind.
