  • Takeaways 36 - Curt Anderson: Asking 'why not' when it comes to change

    12/01/2023 Duración: 01h13min

Curt Anderson is a CPA by trade, but a serial entrepreneur by spirit. He co-founded his accounting firm, Fair Anderson Langerman, in 1988 and he co-founded my company MDL Group in 1989. On this episode he mentioned that he has been involved with 23 partnerships over his 40 + year career. Originally from South Bend Indiana, Curt of course graduated from Notre Dame with his BA in Business Administration with an accounting emphasis. From there he accepted an opportunity to move to Southern California as a young partner of a national accounting firm. Curt calls himself “lucky” to have this experience at such a young age. And as the conversation continued, perhaps the luckiest thing that ever happened to Curt was meeting his wife Sue on a blind date while they were in college. Make Your Life Decision Based on What You Want, Not How Much Money You Want Curt is someone who likes to help people figure out what they want to do and how to get there. He is classically trained as a CPA, but in reality, he was neve

  • Takeaways 35 - Tina Quigley: If you're not going to stir the pot sometimes, who else is?

    02/12/2022 Duración: 01h05min

On this episode of Takeaways, I had the privilege to connect with Tina Quigley, who became the President and CEO of LVGEA (Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance) as of February 2022. Prior to that, she was CEO of the RTC (Regional Transportation Commission) for 14 years. In addition to her career accomplishments, Tina is also a licensed pilot. Although she does not currently fly planes, she has been flying successfully in the community and continues to be a leader in Las Vegas every day.  If Not You, Then Who? Tina’s second-born son was born with a liver problem that required him to have a liver transplant and she didn’t know if he was going to make it for the first two years of his life. Today he is healthy and successful. However, the extreme stress and many sleepless nights exposed Tina’s most extreme and vulnerable sides. This event made her more aware of her own capability to deal with stress, her strength as a fighter, and her natural abilities to lead.  Tina has been called a fighter for good reason. O

Keep reading for a summary, and listen to the audio below. After a brief intro to the NAIOP program, you will hear the panelists themselves and the program in its entirety. TAKEAWAYS – Life. Lessons. Learned. Downtown Las Vegas: All Grown Up! Downtown Las Vegas is all grown up! The panelists in this episode broke down three main principles of downtown Las Vegas: pillows, PCs, and plates. In other words, where you sleep, where you work, and where you eat. It all starts with where you sleep. The demand to live in downtown Las Vegas is huge. When people have options, that spurs growth. There are new residential living options already available, with many more on the way, including new high-rise condos, multi-family housing, shared living spaces, and more. Downtown Las Vegas began with entertainment, but it’s become much more over the last 20 years. It is ex

  • NAIOP Takeaways 28 - The Future of the Las Vegas Strip is Here

    26/10/2022 Duración: 01h01s

TAKEAWAYS explores coming together and learning from the wisdom of others, and we had another great NAIOP SOUTHERN NEVADA Program in August. The topic of this month’s NAIOP meeting is the future of the Las Vegas Strip. Keep reading for a summary and listen to the audio below. After a brief intro to the NAIOP program, you will hear the panelists themselves and the program in its entirety! TAKEAWAYS – Life. Lessons. Learned. They’re Not Making Any More Land in Southern Nevada Many of us spend our time thinking of Las Vegas as it was in the past. Free parking and $.99 shrimp cocktails. The August NAIOP breakfast program focused us on the future. Business has changed. The customer has changed. Las Vegas is ever evolving. We want to embrace that - not fight it. The customer of today wants an experience. They want elevated food, shopping, and entertainment. Professional sports are here and they aren’t going anywhere. Even with a recession looming the Las Vegas economy is still looking up. Is Las Vegas reces

  • Takeaways 34 - Somer Holingsworth: The Early Days of Business, Banking, and the Mob in Las Vegas

    18/10/2022 Duración: 01h50min

On this episode of Takeaways, I had the treat of talking to Somer Hollingsworth, a household name in the southern Nevada community. Somer has been in Las Vegas since he was a teenager and called the area a “Mecca” for him and his family when they moved here from Texas. After a 30-year career in banking, Somer was asked to lead the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA), or as it was known at the time, the Nevada Development Authority (NDA). One thing I loved about this episode is the massive amount of incredible insider Las Vegas information that Somer has to share. He was on the frontlines of some of Nevada’s most notable economic development activities over the past four decades. He’s got a ton of great stories and wisdom to share, and it was a genuine pleasure to have this conversation with him. Community Comes First What stood out to me as Somer and I spoke is his commitment to southern Nevada. He and his team at NDA were committed to bettering this community, and he wasn’t afraid to get in the fac

LaPour Partners builds industrial, office, and hospitality space. Jeff enjoys taking on complicated projects. The lessons Jeff shared in that class stuck with me ever since. Be a Believer in Your Ideas & Have Confidence in Yourself In this episode of Takeaways, Jeff shared wisdom on everything from mentorship to learning through mistakes. He talked about the importance of being aware of what the market is doing and following your instincts, even when others might think you’re crazy. “I have learned way more from failing than I ever did from being

The panel for the July NAIOP breakfast consisted of experts that discussed the issue of land in Nevada. They provided insight on Las Vegas’ LANDscape and what southern Nevada can expect as we continue to develop. • Takeaways 32 – Michelle Cupersmith: You Can Do Hard Things

    28/07/2022 Duración: 01h24min

Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. When I turned 40 a few years ago, it occurred to me that if I didn’t start getting healthy, I would be 50 before I knew it, and still feel bad. It was time to make a change in my health habits. I landed on running. I started with the Nike Run Club app that coached me through my runs. As I saw results, both mentally and physically, running became more and more of a passion. I decided to get a coach and start training for a half marathon. That’s when I met Michelle Cupersmith. Michelle’s resume will tell you she’s a senior financial analyst with Light & Wonder, formerly Scientific Games. She has a double major in accounting and psychology. Her resume is impressive but, first and foremost, Michelle identifies as a runner. It’s her hobby and passion and she’s helped make running a passion for people who she coaches through Team Run Run. Michelle has given me vital lessons, tips, and coaching that allowed me to complete a half marathon in under 10 minutes on average per mile

  • Takeaways 31 – Kri Edholm: Takeaways Evolution & Expansion

    28/07/2022 Duración: 10min

Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. In any occurrence, whatever you are doing, whoever you are meeting, there are always Takeaways that can be learned. I started this podcast in January of 2018 as a way to share the Takeaways I’ve learned from incredible individuals that have come into my life. By that summer I started recording Takeaways from events that I regularly attended, namely the NAIOP Southern Nevada monthly breakfast programs. Takeaways the Process It’s been four years and about 60 episodes since I began Takeaways. Takeaways has been a journey. From making the time to consistently produce the content, to evolving interviews to zoom during the pandemic, and then slowing down all together. Recently, I took a step back to evaluate where I was and where I wanted Takeaways to go. I realized two things. 1. This is something I enjoy, I believe the audience enjoys, and that I wanted to continue. 2. I was bottlenecking the journey. Scheduling guests. Writing post descriptions. Distributing content. T

Takeaways – Life. Lessons. Learned. In his own words, Dr. Kevin Odor is, “One of the few that leads the few that lead the many.” Formerly the senior pastor at Canyon Ridge Church, Kevin has spent years serving those he shepherds. After retiring from the church, he made the natural transition to continue his leadership journey as a full-time chair and executive coach with Vistage International. What does it mean to Thrive? Vistage, whose name blends the words “Vista” and “Advantage”, is an executive coaching and peer advisory organization. Kevin began working with the company as a member 17 years ago, during his pastoral years. After leading his own succession at Canyon Ridge, Kevin discovered working with executives and helping them thrive as full-hearted leaders to be incredibly fulfilling. Kevin has a unique perspective on the theme of “thriving”, specifically thriving with a full heart. Learning the “put your mask on first” is important for anyone that is working themselves too hard. You have to first

Commercial Real Estate and Economic Development To kick off the panel, Tina Quigley, President and CEO of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, shares a story about sunglasses. After trying on a pair of sunglasses that she liked, she decided to settle on the less expensive pair—talking herself out of the better ones. Her friend lovingly called her out, acknowledging that she is BETTER than that.   Southern Nevada is at a point where we are attracting businesses and jobs from all over the country and the world, and some of those jobs simply because we are less expensive than other states. We must begin to ask ourselves if we want all of the leftover jobs, or if we

The university is a catalyst for population growth, an educated workforce, and increasingly the overall medical community in Southern Nevada. How it develops drives our community's ability to be competitive and it influences the neighborhoods around it.
