  • Live Delay - Ep 69 - Gerald Keaney and The Gerald Keaneys; Tape/Off

    30/05/2014 Duración: 56min

Gerald Keaney and the Gerald Keaneys: Gerald Keaney and The Gearlad Keaneys is the band of Brisbane philosopher and social activist Dr. Gerald Keaney. They play what could possibly only be referred to as ‘deconstructed pop music’ – which I know doesn’t have the same ring as ‘Grunge’ or ‘trip hop’. Partly sarcastic, mostly satirical, they have an ‘Abbreviated Pop Song’ as well as another ‘Song of Songs’, a witty one about the every-growing concern in the music industry about having too many songs. Sort of, not really but we can agree that Gerald Keaney and The Gerald Keaneys are anti-capitalism without having to resort to Beatles covers or ‘Free Hug’ placards. Recorded by Josh Watson. Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 4 Layers of Zed, Mar 29 2014. Tape/Off: They’ve been making music under that name since 2009, and all the members are heavily involved in other bands and creative pursuits. Recently they released the first single and accompanying music video from their upcoming album, which is set for

  • Live Delay - Ep 70 - Primitive Motion; The Kramers

    29/05/2014 Duración: 56min

Primitive Motion: Leighton and Sandra began performing as a duo a short while after the demise of The Deadnotes, a group that they played in with Eugene Carchesio and Stuart Busby. Focused around Casio keyboards, delayed vocals and loop stations, the music of Primitive Motion is a sort of experimental pop sound with a strong focus on melody and texture. A combination of their more artistic backgrounds and a DIY pop sensibility. Leighton runs Kindling records and Sandra is an accomplished visual artist, having had a few works displayed at GoMA. Recorded by Josh Watson & Mino Peric. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Brightside, Apr 4 2014. The Kramers: Ethan Kernaghan has been performing under the name ‘The Kramers’ since the age of 14, and the band have slowly morphed into a three-piece. It’s all part of a bigger picture and most recently the live show has involved a bit of performance art. They played The Underdog in Brisbane on ANZAC Day night and towards the end of their set Ethan took hammer to na

  • Live Delay - Ep 67 - Extrafoxx; Naked Maja

    16/05/2014 Duración: 56min

Extrafoxx: Conwae Burrell is Extrafoxx, mostly, he has a band but faces come and go. He’s been making humorous but somehow earnest pop-punk since the early 2000s but it wasn’t until 2010 that Extrafoxx’s debut album was released on Bedroom Suck Records. Songs such as ‘Big Pineapple’ and ‘Lisa Needs Braces’ (an ode to the Simpsons joke) are like folk music for the jaded gen x internet addicts – everyone sings along too. If you don’t believe the hype just wait and hear for yourself. Recorded by Josh Watson. Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 4 Layers of Zed, Mar 29 2014. Naked Maja: They’ve undergone a few line-up changes while exploring their place in the greater sound spectrum. 2014 sees the band furthering their electronic influences and becoming tighter in the process without losing their introspective edge. In November 2013 they released their third EP titled Disillusion as a free download on bandcamp. For this performance they tried out some new material, a teething set as they called it. Chris

  • Live Delay - Ep 68 - Brisbane Live Music Week

    16/05/2014 Duración: 56min

No Sister: No Sister are a young Brisbane band, not everyone in the band has reached legal drinking age yet. Almost. One influence sits on the tip of my tongue, Sonic Youth, of course there’s a few similarities between the New York of myth and legend and these river-city upstarts: the male/female call and response vocals, the loud effected jazzmaster/jaguar guitars. Recorded by Branko Cosic and Cameron Smith. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at 4ZZZ Studios, Mar 28 2014. Heir Fuller: At only 16 years of age Heir Fuller’s J. H. Fuller shows maturity and patience beyond his years. He and his band make widescreen rock, reminiscent of contemporary mostly instrumental rock bands like Sigur Ros and Mogwai, bands that these days play to thousands at summer festivals around the world. Heir Fuller aren’t just taking cues from the big leagues though, the recording of theirs I’m about to play for you is actually a cover of another Brisbane group, Still Rain Fell. It’s called ‘Nolstagia’ and they stretch out the minu

  • Live Delay - Ep 66 - Cannon; Dag

    14/05/2014 Duración: 56min

Cannon: Cannon are one of Brisbane’s quiet achievers but you wouldn’t know it if you saw one of their shows. Yes, they’re loud, they’re messy and sweaty and look so effortless doing it all too because they do this almost every weekend. They released their debut album in 2011 and followed it up with a 7” single last year on Bon Voyage records, a Brizzy label that brought you the Feathers LP and later the debut 7” of Martyr privates. But it’s their dynamic unpretentious live presence that sets them apart from your everyday garage rock band. That and their songs are damn catchy too. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Underdog, Mar 22 2014. Dag: The name Dag conjures up images of 20th century Australiana, a not so distant past but an endearing one at that. Dag main man, Dusty, channels his inner Grant McLennan and wears the Go-Betweens influence on his sleeve. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it dolewave (the unfortunate title for a new wave of Australian jangle-pop) and it’s more similar to Sco

  • Live Delay - Ep 65 - Gooch Palms; Woodboot

    09/05/2014 Duración: 56min

Gooch Palms: Gooch Palms are a band from Newcastle and they’re very proud about it, I think. Its hard to tell because these guys have such a wonderful self-deprecating sense of humour. You know the type of person that’s impossible to embarrass? That’s Gooch Palms. They’re probably one of the few bands around these days to warrant an R18+ rating, or to even live up to the claims in their press-releases. When you’re nervous about going on stage someone will usually give you that timeless piece of advice, “Just imagine everybody in their underwear.” Leroy turns that old chestnut on its head and plays with no pants. He stands there in front of an audience of close to 100, wearing nothing but a lycra top, like G.G. Allin without the ‘first 3 rows will get wet’ warning. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Underdog, Mar 22 2014. Woodboot: Woodboot is perhaps the most in your face obnoxious band in Australia right now. Guerrilla-style facebook marketing has created an astonishing amount of buzz arou

  • Live Delay - Ep 64 - The Wrong Man; Multiple Man

    07/04/2014 Duración: 55min

The Wrong Man: They’ve been playing shows in Brisbane more frequently in the past six months, what with now having the support of local label Swashbuckling Hobo behind them in the form of a recently released 7” EP. Fred Gooch and Daniel Decsi make up the duo with Fred taking guitar and vocal duties and Daniel backing on drums. Fred performed solo until he employed Daniel in early 2013, with the addition of a drummer Fred’s music has gotten wilder and more energetic. Recorded by Matt Hall. Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at The The Hideaway, Mar 15 2014. Multiple Man: Multiple Man were one of the local supports for the evening, they’ve been a popular support band for a lot of touring bands in the last year. They’re slowly starting to step out in their own right, having released a 7” on Melbourne label Detonic Recordings as well as playing shows in Sydney and Melbourne semi-frequently and with them heading south once again it seemed as good a time as any to revisit the Campion twins’ strangely retro-f

  • Live Delay - Ep 63 - Summer Flake; Gravel Samwidge

    05/04/2014 Duración: 55min

Summer Flake: Stephanie Crase is an Adelaide native who has been performing under the moniker ‘Summer Flake’ since 2012. Steph has been a member of New Zealand rock band Batrider as well as Adelaide bands Hit the Jackpot! and No Through Road. She still finds time to write, record and perform with Fair Maiden (they have a debut LP coming out in June) a band she formed with Ellen Carey back in 2007. The music of Summer Flake – like a snow flake or a Cadbury flake – is a delicate thing. Musically, there’s a lot of passion in Steph’s guitar playing; it rises and falls, ebbs and flows. Her voice works in much the same way, wholly dynamic and enchanting, it hurts when those heart-wretched syllables are prolonged into anguish or contemplation. Recorded by Matt Hall. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The The Hideaway, Mar 15 2014. Gravel Samwidge: Gravel Samwidge formed in the late 80s but they’re still kicking around with some new blood. Mark Spinks has kept the name all these years and the band even won a Trip

  • Live Delay - Ep 61 - Nana Vigilante; Curlew; Snotty Babies

    05/04/2014 Duración: 55min

Nana Vigilante: Nana Vigilante is the pairing of Lindsay Roser and Julian Saunders. They’re very BNE-centric – Lindsay raps of her fondness for the brown river city quite often. Julian’s production has reflections of 90s Aus hip-hop on some tracks while others have a more industrial noise influence. You can probably guess that they are indeed a hip-hop duo, something you don’t usually see in a Brisbane pub. OPERATION PUT BRISBANE ON THE MAP! Recorded & mixed by Andrew McLellan. Recorded at The Underdog, 21st February 2014. Curlew: Curlew, a Brisbane based duo that are a bit reminiscent of Gareth Liddiard but some with post-rock undertones and a hint of Mum Smokes. Long songs are their thing, they played only a two-song set at The Waiting Room on February 14. Mark Zian and Callum Wheeler make up the duo. Is it anti-punk or completely punk? It’s hard to say. Mark sings of rats tails and childhood, it sounds a bit like therapy. Recorded & mixed by Joshua Watson. Recorded at The Waiting Room, Feb 14 2014.

  • Live Delay - Ep 62 - Mope City; Worm Crown

    05/04/2014 Duración: 56min

Mope City: Mope City formed in Marrickville at the end of 2012. Matt Nev fronts the band half the time; he’s been involved in Day Ravies, Drown Under and Snotty Babies. For the other half of the time Amaya Lang of Snotty Babies sings lead. Rounding out the classic power-trio formation is Sam Wilkinson of Day Ravies fame manning the skins. Mope City write songs on the sadder side of life which is not surprising seeing as the Sydney music scene is a fairly depressing state of affairs at the moment. When NSW Police Minister Michael Gallacher said that the ‘Sydney live music scene is dead’ it wasn’t exactly encouraging for local musicians, but I doubt it matters at all to Mope City. Matt sounds way more despondent than Kurt Cobain ever did. This is real rainy-day music, like early Failure, Chavez and Built to Spill. As if the only Go-Betweens song they’ve ever heard is Apology Accepted. Recorded & mixed by Luke Walsh. Recorded at The Greenslopes Bowls Club, Feb 22 2014. Worm Crown: Worm Crown are a three pi

  • Live Delay - Ep 60 - Treehouse; Thigh Master

    15/03/2014 Duración: 56min

Treehouse: Treehouse are a three-piece grunge ensemble that formed around three years ago in Hobart’s Eastern Shore block. These young lads follow a similar thread of raw and uncompromising rock n roll energy that was bursting from the seems of 90s Tasmania, by and large, Treehouse are not dissimilar to the fed-up enthusiasm projected by the likes of Sea Scouts, The Stickmen and The Dacios. They’ve appeared on the Rough Skies Community compilations and have recently announced a vinyl re-issue of their 2013 cassette on Melbourne label Vacant Valley. Recorded & mixed by Luke Walsh. Recorded at Greenslopes Bowls Club,22nd February 2014. Thigh Master: The Ford brothers operate more like music production company rather than just two guys with some songs. Under their belt they have the washed-out slacker vibes of Black Vacation, the bitingly catchy pop-punk Kids Cryptic and most recently Thigh Master – which lies somewhere between those other two. Then there’s their solo and side projects: Dan has his electron

  • Live Delay - Ep 59 - Leighton Craig; High Beamz

    07/03/2014 Duración: 55min

Leighton Craig: Leighton’s been involved in the Brisbane music scene since the early 90’s – notably playing in fabled noise-rock collective, The Lost Domain, for a number of years. Nowadays, he’s better known for having played in The Deadnotes, Fig and Primitive Motion. On occasion, Leighton will perform solo, a rare and enchanting occurrence to be sure. His performances ranges from casio-pop songs to ambient soundscapes, a true journey for the aural senses. Recorded by Joshua Watson. Mixed by Michael Whitney. Recorded at The Waiting Room, Feb 14 2014. High Beamz: Emma Wilson, aka High Beamz is riding the recent wave of techno revivalism – taking some deep-sea pearls of wisdom from Drexciya as well as more geographically appropriate acts like Scattered Order and the more recent Lace Curtain. Although, fairly new to the scene, she’s already focusing a sharp direct effort right into the feel-good-dancing culture of Brisbane. Recorded by Joshua Watson Mixed by Michael Whitney. Recorded at The Waiting Room,

  • Live Delay - Ep 58 - Circular Keys; Lucy Cliché

    26/02/2014 Duración: 55min

Circular Keys: Circular Keys are an electronic duo from the big smoke, Melbourne. Their enormous live-presence comes from the 6-string axe; Dennis Santiago shows you how much you can accomplish with an aluminium guitar and a table of pedals. While he’s preoccupied with laying down the law of audio-land, singer Phillipa O’Shea isn’t stuck in the background corner with the equal parts massive and angelic vocal chords. Room 40 invited them up to Brisbane to support Mark McGuire for the annual sound and media festival, Open Frame. Recorded & mixed by Joshua Watson Live at The Brisbane Powerhouse, 14 September 2013 Lucy Cliché: Lucy Cliché is Sydney’s Geneva Jacuzzi or Nite Jewel or Maria Minerva; an electronic artist flitting between the worlds of experimentalism and bedroom-pop. Her diverse catalogue includes the noise-rock band Naked on the Vague, Half High her ambient-noise project with partner Matthew Hopkins and the celebration of weird that is Knitted Abyss with Holy Balm’s Anna John. October 2013 saw

  • Live Delay - Ep 57 - Blank Realm

    21/02/2014 Duración: 56min

Blank Realm: Some are already calling 2014 ‘the year of Blank Realm’ and why not? They’ve received glowingly positive reviews for their new record, Grassed Inn, from the likes of Pitchfork; Mojo; The Wire and The Guardian. The Brisbane quartet are taking their psychedelic slacker-rock worldwide and all good plans have to start somewhere so they started last week at The Underdog in Brisbane. The live recording team were there for an album launch full of drunken revelry, a celebration of all things realm. The crowd were dancing all around the racket, at one point one lucky punter found themselves clinging to the lighting rig for dear life. Supports on the night were local garage-pop brats Thigh Master, frown-rockers Sewers, Sydney’s electro/experimental heroine Lucy Cliché and living-room rave band Four Door. Live @ The Underdog, Feb 8 2014 Recorded by Joshua Watson & Andrew Mclellan. Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 14 February 2014. Show production and

  • Live Delay - Ep 51 - No Anchor

    02/01/2014 Duración: 55min

NO ANCHOR: One wonders if Ian Rogers, Alex Gillies and Donavan Miller – the guitar-less godhead of Brisbane three-piece No Anchor – have been in cahoots with local ENT doctors for the past few years. How many eardrums have been perforated with all that doomish bass insanity? Taking their cues from the likes of The Jesus Lizard, Boris, Melvins and half a dozen sludgy-infested rock groups from the 1980s onwards, No Anchor have slowly but surely built up a cult-like following throughout the antipodes, culminating in 2013’s excellent record, The Golden Bridge. In this episode of Live Delay, we bring you the group’s pummeling performance from The Waiting Room in Brisbane, May 2013 where they played alongside O and Vassals. Horns up. Recorded by Darragh Murray & Cameron Smith. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 3 January 2014. Show production and engineering: Darragh Murray.

  • Live Delay - Ep 50 - Beaches; Barbiturates

    27/12/2013 Duración: 56min

Beaches: Beaches are an exceptional band – both on record and on stage, so it’s with some pleasure that we bring you an extract from their recent east coast tour of Australia in support of their killer 2013 record ‘She Beats’ that came out through Chapter Music. Mixing in the pysch of the 1970s with elements of shoegaze and straight up rock and roll seeping through, this quintet have been quietly building up a worldwide following over the past half a decade. Expect a dervish of musical escapades. This live recording comes from the band’s visit to Brisbane back in about June 2013 when they played at the Black Bear Lodge. Barbiturates: Barbiturates are Roland Hlavka and Elliot D’arcy, two musicians known for their work in Brisbane psych outfit Cobbwebbs. This particular project emerged from eclectic rehearsal room jams that didn’t quite fit the CV of their former band – and thus the side project was born! Still channeling their DIY roots, Barbiturates sway between pop and psych, adding in generous additio

  • Live Delay - Ep 49 - The Native Cats

    21/12/2013 Duración: 58min

The Native Cats: Fresh from polling #4 in the Mess and Noise critics choice in 2013 for their 2013 blockbuster ‘Dallas’, The Native Cats are on Live Delay. Coincidence? I think not. We’ve got this extra special pre-xmas gift for all you listeners out there – The Native Cats playing live on stage from the Alliance Tavern in Brisbane back in September 2013. If you’ve never heard of the band before, they’re made up of Peter Escott and Julian Teakle and formed in Hobart in 2007, playing their first show on Australia Day 2008. Since then they’re released three full length records, toured extensively both in Australia and in the United States. Calling the likes of The Fall and New Order influences, they’ve got this great pastiche of noise and stream of conscious style lyrics floating around in the sonic crevices between your brain and your motor functions. It’s great stuff. We’re pretty stoked to be able to bring this full length live set of The Native Cats. There’s also a special feature interview with Julian

  • Live Delay - Ep 48 - School Girl Report; Amateur Childbirth

    20/12/2013 Duración: 56min

School Girl Report: The duo known as School Girl Report hail from Bateman’s Bay on the south coast of New South Wales. Made up of the godhead of Samuel Miers and Daniel Oakman, they compose weird, erratic and an almost indescribable cacophony of sound. It’s often dark, perhaps industrial, but most import of all – it’s something fresh and different from the usual Live Delay stable – and hey! We EMBRACE difference here. As far as I can see, they’ve released one tape via Do You Block called ‘Success is Dating School Girl Report’ but been a fairly active live band – playing a load of shows over the past three years up and down the east coast of Australia. The live set we’ve got for you is from the duo’s trip up to Brisbane to play 4ZZZ’s Red Mecca night at the Alliance Tavern in Spring Hill. The band played alongside the likes of Four Door, Native Cats and a few others. You should definitely tune in. Recorded at the Alliance Tavern, Brisbane, September 2013. Recorded and mixed by Andrew McLellan. Amateur Ch
