  • Live Delay - Ep 91 - Gold Class; Bearded Iris

    15/10/2014 Duración: 56min

Gold Class: You wouldn’t have guessed that Gold Class only formed in early 2014, their debut 7” ‘Michael’ feels more like a band that has been tightening up their craft for years. It’s probably got something to do with members of Bone and Nth Wheel being involved – those groups in themselves have shown proficiency for towing the line between construction and upheaval. Gold Class play misanthropic baritone-led post-punk, but, what would usually sound languid and murky is instead much more energetic and melodic. The film-clip for the single is a simple and colourful video that really compliments the vibrancy that the group can achieve. Recorded by Dusty Anastassiou. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Catfish, Melbourne. 10 October 2014. Bearded Iris: Bearded Iris started as a solo project by Melbourne artist Ora Ni aka Jane, and has since morphed into a supergroup comprising of members from a wide variety of bands and artists in the Melbourne underground scene. Sharing lead vocals is visual artist Car

  • Live Delay - Ep 90 - Dud Pills; Scrabbled

    09/10/2014 Duración: 56min

Dud Pills: Did you know that some of the fellas from Bitch Prefect were all in a short-lived band called Dud Pills? Pat Telfer, Liam Kenny and their mate Pete who allegedly punched a guy so hard that a tooth got embedded in his fist. Dud Pills share a lot of similarities with the lo-fi pop of the aforementioned Bitch Prefect as well as some psych tendencies that Pat lashes out these days in his own band, ‘Old Mate’. They only ever had two releases a CD-R on Dirty Burger Records and a cassette titled ‘Sexy As Hell’ that released on Stacey Wilson’s (Terrible Truths, Rites Wild) old label ‘Faux Friends’. In November 2013, 3 years after that cassette, they reunited for a show at The Metro in Adelaide where they premiered one whole new song. Recorded & mixed by Patrick Lockwood. Recorded at The Metro, Adelaide. 24 November 2013. Scrabbled: Clag vocalist Bek Moore formed Scrabbled with Extrafoxx main-guy Conwae Burrell and the group rapidly ballooned in membership not long after formation. Conwae has since m

  • Live Delay - Ep 89 - Shrapnel; Orion

    30/09/2014 Duración: 56min

Shrapnel: Shrapnel is the solo synth pop project of Sydney-sider Sam Wilkinson, perhaps better known for his involvement in bands such as: Day Ravies, King Tears Mortuary and Mope City. ‘Tobacco Dreams’ is his debut release on Tenth Court records, a bedroom-pop album that does a fine job showing that Sam is one of those multi-talented kind of guys that’s helping further blur the line of song-writer and producer. Recorded & mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 107 Projects, Sydney. 19 July 2014. Orion: Comprising of members of the equally dearly departed Whores and Oily Boys, Orion take up the quieter, more melodic moments hinted on that latter band’s debut EP, Majesty. They sit somewhere between the arty post punk of Naked on The Vague and the slightly less arty post punk of Constant Mongrel. In fact, some songs have an almost Orange Juice kind of suave. Recorded & mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 107 Projects, Sydney. 19 July 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 26

  • Live Delay - Ep 88 - Gazar Strips; Boiled Dwarf

    30/09/2014 Duración: 56min

Gazar Strips: Gazar Strips, a band that released a 12” EP called, Sparkling, back in April on Sonic Masala records. A label that has released a lot of great contemporary Australian alternative rock bands from a very wide net – sonically speaking Gazar Strips sit somewhere between the vivacious detachment of The Cure and the dour rock of Echo and The Bunnymen, but they play in a way that sounds like they’ve taken a few cues from the recent Swans records. Gazar Strips take the opportunity to play with the dynamics and indulge in an unrelenting wall of noise, only briefly. Recorded by SLAM Sound. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival, Brisbane. 21 June 2014. Boiled Dwarf: Boiled Dwarf was formed as a reason to reunite some of the main members of the bands Above Ground Pool and Bamboo Sel – Bek Moore who is best known for her group Clag, Mia Schoen who also played in Molasses and Sleepy Township but is now better known for her Visual Art, as well as Julian Williams who currently plays unde

  • Live Delay - Ep 87 - Mixed Bag

    19/09/2014 Duración: 56min

Halfway: Halfway originally formed in 2000 shortly after John Busby, Chris Dale and Elwin Hawton moved from Rockhampton to Brisbane and met bassist Ben Johnson. Later, they added brothers Noel and Liam Fitzparick and by 2008 the group had released 2 records and picked up the Grant McLennan prize for song-writing. Recently, they’ve added ex-Go-Between John Willsteed and Luke Peacock to to bring that headcount up to 8. In February 2014 they released their latest record, Any Old Love, which received high praise from Mess + Noise, The Courier Mail and the Sydney Morning Herald. Recorded & mixed by John Robinson. Recorded at Big Sound 2012 Adele & Glenn: Adele Pickvance and Glenn Thompson were the rhythm section for the Go-Betweens during the ‘re-formation years’ between 2000 and 2006. In 2011 they got back together to play each other’s songs and released their first album ‘Carrington Street’ in 2012. They received some very nice reviews for their humble indie-folk record. Recorded & mixed by John Robinson R

  • Live Delay - Ep 86 - Cobwebbs; ∑gg√e|n

    11/09/2014 Duración: 56min

Cobwebbs: Cobwebbs have just recently released their second album on Sonic Masala records; ‘World Wide Webs’ is a strange yet abrasive rock record that builds on the strengths of their 2012 debut record. To put it simply, they’ve been writing better songs. As it turns out practice does make perfect. Members of the band also get involved in various other projects like: Barbiturates, Caterpillar Hood, Police Force, World War IV, Gold Shade. I hear the drummer even makes his own BBQ sauce. Recorded & mixed by Michael Whitney. Recorded at HappyFest, Brisbane. August 22nd 2014. ∑gg√e|n: ∑gg√e|n are hard to pin down, they’re not a conventional band. They have a situation similar to TISM, in that the band members prefer to adopt pseudonyms to mask their identity. ∑gg√e|n sound more like stoner metal than the alternative rock that TISM went for, although, both groups explore the philosophies of wankers and yobs, and the way of the world. Front-man Magnus ’Opus, a hairy mass of a man, he wails and moans like a mo

  • Live Delay - Ep 85 - Turnpike; Scul Hazzards

    05/09/2014 Duración: 56min

Turnpike: Turnpike have been around for a good long while, releasing a few CDs and 7”s here and there. They’re better known as a live band, having played probably close to a hundred or so shows in Brisbane, the kind of band you see name-dropped in interviews rather than writ in large type. Tim Brennan of TYM’s guitars says of the band, “Turnpike are, and will always be one the best bands you’ve probably never heard of and probably one of the best bands to ever come out of Brisbane … They are impossible to be a fan of as you can’t buy any of their music and they rarely play live, you can’t even get a T shirt.” That said, not long after this performance they finally finished making their latest record. Recorded by SLAM Sound. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival, Brisbane. June 21st 2014. Scul Hazzards: Scul Hazzards originated from Brisbane in the mid-2000s and after quickly churning out a couple of full-length LPs decided to relocate to London in 2008. They returned to Australia a

  • Live Delay - Ep 84 - No Magic; Enderie Nuatal

    30/08/2014 Duración: 56min

No Magic: No Magic is the latest project of Lewis O’Leary, the currently Brisbane-based songwriter and artist behind Old Growth Cola. He’s recently returned from living in Montreal for the last year, where he relocated following his previous band’s US tour. His new artistic outlet was established in Montreal and stemmed from his time experimenting with sound sculptures and other Arduino controlled devices. That isn’t to say that he’s forgone the pop-sensibility that has underpinned his past musical projects, if anything he’s really stepped up his game on those catchy melodies. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Bearded Lady, Brisbane. August 7th 2014. Enderie Nuatal: Enderie Nuatal is the solo techno project of Andrew McLellan, who also happens to be the brainchild behind the industrial-funk band Cured Pink. Andrew obviously has a diverse range of influences going on – Cured Pink draws inspiration from bands such as Cabaret Voltaire, SPK, Neubauten; the Enderie Nuatal moniker though is ta

  • Live Delay - Ep 83 - The Scrapes; Brainbeau

    24/08/2014 Duración: 56min

The Scrapes: The Scrapes are a duo consisting of Adam Cadell on violin and Ryan Potter on guitar/sitar. They’ve been playing together as The Scrapes for the past 5 years now and have released two albums to their name. Independent of the band, Adam recently spent some time in West Africa playing and recording music, a bit of which found it’s way onto his 2013 solo album Til It All Melts Away. The influence of other cultures’ music has seeped into The Scrapes ever so subtly. A Gonjey (an African one stringed fiddle) being the most consciously worldly addition to their arsenal of instruments. Your guess is as good as mine as to what we’ll be hearing on their third record, due for release later this year. Recorded & mixed by Michael Whitney. Recorded at The Bearded Lady, Brisbane. July 13th 2014. Brainbeau: Brainbeau is Katie Martin and Chelsea Charlton, a couple of people who have been active in a whole host of Brisbane groups for years. Katie has been involved with Stag, Gerald Keaney and The Gerald Keane

  • Live Delay - Ep 82 - Abstract Mutation; Dust Storm Jogger

    14/08/2014 Duración: 56min

Abstract Mutation: Abstract Mutation is the pseudonym of NZ-born Melbourne-based producer James Grant. His music sits somewhere between Acid House and Techno, and incorporates incessant loops, mechanical hi-hats and fuzzy synths. His most recent release on 1080p – the label of Rose Quartz’ Richard MacFarlane – sounds like a dancier Pye Corner Audio exploring themes of surveillance and digital environments. Taking 21st century introspection and media cycles into the outside world. Recorded & mixed by Andrew McLellan. Recorded at Red Mecca, The Pound, Brisbane. June 20th 2014. Dust Storm Jogger: Chelsea Charlton is one half of the Brisbane electronic duo Brainbeau, but the buck doesn’t stop there. He’s played under a tonne of pseudonyms over the last decade or so: Emotional Hoon, Smorgaslord and Good Samaritron to name just a few. He’s a mysterious figure, who cuts a mean beat with a pair of MPCs. It’s worth noting that more often than not Chelsea will be playing those drum patterns by hand in real-time, n

  • Live Delay - Ep 81 - Heads of Charm; Narrow Lands

    07/08/2014 Duración: 56min

Heads of Charm: Heads of Charm have been active as a live band from April 2013, after initially beginning as singer/guitarist David Gagliardi’s studio project. It’s been a while since that debut EP and the band has seem some line-up changes, but they’re stuck to the tried and true power-trio formation. Most recently they’ve released a single entitled ‘Spain is on a Roll’, that’s the reason that the Melbourne lads were recently touring the east-coast for. They’ve covered a lot of ground for a band that still doesn’t have a debut LP but something tells me they’re in not much of a hurry; all their effort has gone into creating a frenetic live show that’s equal parts intelligent and abrasive. Recorded & mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room, Brisbane. May 30th 2014. Narrow Lands: Narrow Lands are four gentle people that like to make violent music. When you consider their 2013 debut album ‘Popular Music That Will Forever’ it’s hard to top that extremely apt description. They’re from Australia’

  • Live Delay - Ep 80 - Tiny Migrants; Per Purpose

    30/07/2014 Duración: 56min

Tiny Migrants: Tiny Migrants are a self-proclaimed group of ‘space garage pirates’ who come from the planet ‘Magicdreams’, or at least that’s what they said in one surprisingly candid interview with FBi Radio. Don’t let the act fool you, they’re not a prog-rock band; they just don’t take it very seriously. Making music that is. What they do create can be filed-under psych influenced garage-pop or to take a leaf out of their book I’ll say, “They’re the sound of The Kinks getting a Chinese burn while plunging into the depths of a dunk machine.” All of the members are active in other groups in Brisbane such as Woodboot , and a few make up the ranks of Brisbane’s favourite garage rock band that can’t fit in a Maxi Taxi – Velociraptor. Recorded by Mark Ryan and SLAM Sound. Mixed by Will Clarke. Recorded at Sonic Masala Fest, Brisbane. June 21st 2014. Per Purpose: Per Purpose have come a long way since supporting Beaches back in June, 2013, we brought you that performance in episode 39 of Live Delay. Since th

  • Live Delay - Ep 79 - Tralala Blip; Wukir Suryadi & Tarquin Manek

    25/07/2014 Duración: 56min

Tralala Blip: Tralala Blip formed in 2007 when Randolf Reimann (Massappeal) became involved with a Lismore disability service that ran music programs for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities. Frustrated with the lack of engagement in the program he began bringing along electronic music equipment to the sessions. His tenure at the disability service ended in late 2008 and he was told that none of the 16 participants were interested in continuing the service. After meeting with a few members of the ensemble it became clear that the project was not cut due to a lack of interest and in 2009 Randolph continued the ensemble not as a program but as an independent band. Since then, they’ve recorded a collaborative LP with fellow Lismore sound artist ‘Muttboy’ and released an album on Brisbane label Disembraining Machine. In 2013, the current lineup of Randolf, Mathew Daymond, Lydian Dunbar, Zac Mifsud and Phoebe Rose were invited to play Unsound festival in Krakow, Poland. Recorded & mixed by Andre

  • Live Delay - Ep 78 - White Lodge; Howling Seas

    15/07/2014 Duración: 56min

White Lodge: Hailing from Queensland’s cultural house of mirrors, The Gold Coast, White Lodge have covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Only forming in 2013 they’ve already had a 7” split record with Taiwan’s Forests. They take a leaf from the books of recently acclaimed acts like Yuck, Ty Segall and White Lung. Meanwhile, they’ve been lessening the wait between their Brisbane shows. It’s hard for a young band like White Lodge to get a break on The Gold Coast. A lack of venues willing to give new alternative bands a go makes the metropolis of Brisbane seem like a cultural safe-haven. Recorded & mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room, Brisbane. May 30 2014. Howling Seas: Howling Seas are three 16-year-old gentlemen, who used to play under the moniker of ‘Gravity Scam’. Now, in beautiful, sunny 2014, they have a self-titled debut album out on CD that has received high praise from both JJJ and Tonedeaf. They’re doing quite well for a group so young; |||their music show a maturity

  • Live Delay - Ep 76 - Dollar Bar; Stag

    02/07/2014 Duración: 56min

Dollar Bar: Dollar Bar formed back in 1998 when Dale Peachey wanted to get a revolving band behind his Guided By Voices and Kurt Vonnegut inspired pop songs. That was the general idea until he got Patrick McCabe, Brendan Rosenstengel and Chris Yates involved, and they’ve stuck together ever since. Well, if you ignore the six years that they were on hiatus. The second coming of Dollar Bar has been very fruitful for the band; since getting back together they’ve released a compilation of old demos, a split cassette with Little Lovers and a sophomore album entitled Paddington Workers Club. The album was released on Brisbane’s Mere Noise records and has lapped up plenty of acclaim over the last 6 months. Recorded by Joshua Watson & Mino Peric. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at Electric Playground, Apr 4 2014. Stag: Stag were an all-girl sort of post-punk inspired band from around 2010 to 2012. They were only around for a short time but they left their mark all the same. Influenced by 80s pro-feminism art-b

  • Live Delay - Ep 75 - Breakdance The Dawn

    26/06/2014 Duración: 56min

Breakdance The Dawn is a DIY experimental music label that originated in the Blue Mountains but has been based out of Real Bad Music in Marooka for the past several years. Matt Earle is the man behind the tapes and CD-Rs that have received overseas acclaim from alternative music press like Wire Magazine as well as a hoard of fans through Glasgow’s Volcanic Tongue mail-order distro. There’s been a steady stream of releases over the past few years and soon they’ll be celebrating the 200th release. Real Bad Music is the venue / house that Matt and his girlfriend Nicola, it’s also known as the magic mile house made famous from the iconic photo of Ed Kuepper standing in front of the old signs from when it were a brothel. Real Bad has picked up from where regular experimental music events like Audiopollen, Disembraining Machine, New Improvised Music Series left off in the constant ebb and flow of available venues for ‘that sort of sound’. For this episode we’ve featured just a couple of the many bands that have a

  • Live Delay - Ep 73 - O; Vassals

    22/06/2014 Duración: 56min

O: Brisbane drone / black metal inspired group O. Simply, O. They merge slow dank bass synth processions with disorderly melodic guitar in a way that makes me wish that DJ Screw lived long enough to get into metal. O have spent the better part of a year working on a 12” record in between life, jobs and other bands. Recorded by Darragh Murray. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 31 2013. Vassals: Every bit as heavy as the other two bands on the bill that night, Vassals present more of a death metal inspired sound. Detuned guitars, heavy riffs and V8 bass underpinned by jazzy drum work. They sound tight and focused, like they’ve really put in the hard yards. The band aren’t active anymore but members have gone on to play in other bands like Inside The Whale, Hope Drone, Marathon and Low Season. Recorded by Darragh Murray. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room, May 31 2013. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 6 June 2014. Show production and engin

  • Live Delay - Ep 72 - Mad Nanna; Bent

    22/06/2014 Duración: 56min

Mad Nanna: Appearing on more international underground music labels than you can poke a stick at, Mad Nanna are quietly one of Australia’s most acclaimed rock bands. They’ve toured both the US and Europe in the last year but you won’t find them at any of the colossal summer music festivals and you won’t read about them in any music street press either. Here I am hammering on about these mainstays of the Australian Music industry when these sorts of things are completely irrelevant to a group like these guys. I could say, “They’re from another world” but that’s just silly. Mad Nanna are from Earth, they play Earth music. They just don’t have songs about summer, actually I don’t know that, maybe Michael does sing about Summer. I’m not gonna pretend I know what Mad Nanna are about – that would take all the fun out of it. So, who are Mad Nanna? Just four realists with some instruments making hypnotic rock songs for the ‘down on their luck’ romantics. Recorded & mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at Chardon

  • Live Delay - Ep 71 - Ela Stiles; Tight Slip

    03/06/2014 Duración: 56min

Ela Stiles: You might know Ela Stiles from some of the bands she’s played in over the last couple of years: Songs and Bushwalking. It was that band Songs which she began with Max Doyle that saw he focus shift from modelling to music. With Karl Scullin (Kes Band, Mum Smokes) and Nisa Venerosa (Fabulous Diamonds) there is Bushwalking, a psych three-piece that she originally formed to work on her solo songs. It turned out to be more of a band than a solo project and they released their second LP ‘ No Enter’ in September last year. Now it’s 2014, it’s time for something new and completely different. Ela’s debut record boasts a completely acapella B-side, which takes a lot of guts. Recorded by Josh Watson & Mino Peric. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Brightside, Apr 4 2014. Tight Slip: Tight Slip were a band active in the Brisbane underground rock scene around 2011-2013. They spun-off from another group called ‘Loose Grip’ a band which consists of the members of Tight Slip plus one Sam McCabe. Both gr
