This series is a standout for the writer and producers.  Yoshitoshi ABe lent his talents as the character designer. He has designed for a number of series. Two great ones, as mentioned by Teylor; NieA 7 & Haibane Renmei. Lain explores the breakdown of self and mental health as well as existential questions in a world where we construct new realities and selves to fill a ‘virtual’ space. Lain is drawn and voice directed differently baed on the which aspect of her personality she takes on. Howard (Pulp Stories 1930s) John recounts his First Love in the auspice of Conan the Barbarian and the collected pulp stories of Robert E Howard! Frazetta’s Conan illustrations inspired many imitators. Boxing, westerns, weird, and swords & sorcery; the pulp stomping grounds of REH. During the intro Jules shares his foray into Snapchat. ___________ pt1: Weezer’s Pinkerton (Album 1996) Keith’s first love is the second album form Weezer. After the first album was a runaway hit the second album was met with a harsh critical eye. The original line-up (1992). The band shifted drastically after Pinkerton. Schlitzie, from Tod Browning’s 1932 film “Freaks,” was microcephalic performer Simon Metz from New York. The Ramones were inspired by this performance to write their track “Pinhead.” The pinhead costume sported at Ramones’ concerts. The iconic phrase at a show. Getting your hands on this series is tough as it is out of print. Le Freak ce Chic - Adam Moerder joins us again as we continue to explore the weird. On the way to our main pick for the week Jules expounds on his new toy: the HTC Vive. None of us (Adam included) were/are fans of the Nu-Metal genre. Heck Keith even questions that it is a genre.  This music video features animation from Todd MacFarlane studios- an animation outfit that lasted about as long as the Nu-Metal kick.  Another Nu-Metal band “Slipknot”- such wonderful masks! Our new topic is about exploring and embracing the weird! We’re joined by our good friend Adam Moerder.  Adam has been collaborating with the team at Godmode Records you should check out their music they’ve been doing great work. As we get into the pick John sidetracked a bit to share about a spate of narrative horror podcasts he’s been listening to check out any of the following if you’re a fan of radio drama, or spooky stuff: Limetown The Message The Black Tapes Tanis Lore ___________ pt1: Freaked (Film 1993) Jule’s pick was the inspiration for this topic. Any reason to watch this Alex Winters and Tommy Stern work of art is welcome. The titles alone are worth the weird. Stop Motion Stratacut clay animation at its strangest- rife with Jan Svankmajer nods. The title track is Henry Rollins. Yes that is a wooden Randy Quaid - he may be the best thing about this movie. Actually- these Rastafar-Eyes may be the best thing about this movie. They actually made merchandise for this picture- and they are appropriately

With the summer upon us we wanted to share a little cross promotion from John’s storytelling/roleplaying series Bored Ghost. The beautiful pastoral setting and painterly composition of scenes captured Keith’s eye. Keira Knightley as the straight-shooting Elizabeth Bennett. This movie has a great cast.   Mr. Darcy in the Mist. Matthew Macfadyen plays the aloof bachelor.   pt3: Death Note (Manga 2003) Proving once again that he has the credentials of a raving otaku John introduces the 2003-2006 manga from Tsugumi Ohba. The series runs in 12 standard manga volumes, which have been collected in a few different editions.  Light Yagami - the human who gets his hand on the Death Note, isn’t exactly a compassionate person. “L” - the super detective soon gets on the case. Their’s is an epic struggle. You can get the entire series as 12 volumes on Amazon, or get it as 6 double volumes also on Amazon. I, Claudius (TV Miniseries 1976) For Jules the BBC/PBS miniseries that brings Robert Graves’ I, Claudius to life was a Slow Burn.  The series follows the Emperor Claudius as he looks back on his life amongst the Roman royals and how he maneuvered their machinations.  Derek Jacobi plays the bumbling (put on?) Claudius in a story that plays like a real life Game of Thrones. Who’s that guy with all that hair?  You can watch I, Claudius on Hulu or buy it on  iTunes and Amazon. The series almost stopped completely in 2007 but thankfully Image picked it up in 2014 and breathed new life into the project.
